Just got my LMT lower with SOMOD stock. Have not had a lot of time to mess with it, but how do the battery compartment caps come off?

You have to remove the stock from the lower before you can access the battery tubes.

is the VLTOR battery compartment the same way?

No, you can remove them with the stock still on the rifle.

Considering that it takes longer to talk about pulling the stock off a carbine than it does to actually do it, I wouldn't look at it as a bad thing.

However, Vltor also has a great cheekweld, and is cheaper.

Pull down on the adjustment tab. Pull backwards on the stock, while keeping the adjustment tab pulled down. The stock will slide off.
With the stock off of the tube, take your finger and rotate the knob on the battery compartment covers. This will let you pull the battery compartment out of the now removed stock. Then all you have to do is pull on the knob and pull off the compartment cover, held in place by two o-rings.

Good luck!

I attached a screen shot of the LMT SOPMOD stock manual here for you.
Shoot me an email if you want it in the original PDF file.

Here's a related SOPMOD question: Can the multiple batteries stored in the "tube" be touching (-) to (+) without any issues with causing discharge or other battery related issues? Or should foam or other electrically inert material be used to separate them?

I'm not very electrical theory/battery savvy, so any input would be appreciated.

Should be fine if only one end touches another. Some of the double CR123 packed that way. I do use disposable ear form mainly to make sure they don't move around in the tube. I have 4 CR123 and 2 AA.

They are fine touching as long as you don't connect a wire from on end to the opposite end. :)
I also buffer mine with some rubber faucet washers between them and at the ends to take up the slack in the tube. (No rattles)

I use foam earplugs between the batteries and at each end to get rid of the rattles.

That's a great idea! Thanks - Now I need to load them up with batts!
