So this happened.

Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov shot dead - BBC News (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-31669061)

And then tens of thousands of Russians turned out to honor him.

Boris Nemstov murder: Tens of thousands march in Moscow - BBC News (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-31677506)

And now the woman who was walking with him and is (reportedly) the only witness to his murder is under "house arrest" in Russia. Needless to say, this has all fueled speculation as to who killed him and why.

Let the conspiracy theories begin: Who killed Boris Nemtsov? - PRI (http://www.pri.org/stories/2015-03-02/witness-boris-nemtsovs-murder-cant-leave-russia)

And Garry Kasparov, a Russian chessmaster living in self-imposed exile in the US has said that there cannot now be a peaceful transition of power in away from Putin in Russia.

Russian chest master Kasparov: Now there's 'no chance' for a peaceful transition beyond Putin - Business Insider (http://www.businessinsider.com/r-hopes-for-peaceful-russian-transition-fade-with-nemtsov-kasparov--2015-3)

Which of course reminds one of a certain article from last year....

Russian Man Recalls Oppressive Days Under Communism When No One Could Speak Freely Or Protest Government - The Onion (http://www.theonion.com/articles/russian-man-recalls-oppressive-days-under-communis,33492/)

IMHO, the loss of Boris Nemtsov is a loss for any shot at a more peaceful resolution to the situation in Ukraine. Not to mention the hit to political freedoms in Russia that the assassination embodies, regardless of the truth behind the murder.

And here's my theory: Putin did it. Or ordered it done. Putin's friends at the FSB will turn up that Boris Nemtsov was into kiddy porn (or something of the like) and was extremely close with either the Russian mob or ultra-violent Ukrainian nationalists. That something went wrong between Nemtsov and the mob/nationalists and they decided then to kill him. In the event of the mob, Putin's friends in the mafia probably already have a couple guys they want to get rid of set to take the fall. In the event of it being Ukrainian nationalists, they will have fled the country and will eventually be killed or captured fighting in eastern Ukraine - where upon they will be extradited from the "People's Republic of Donetsk" to Russia. The accused - mobsters or nationalists - will plead their innocence at trial, be found guilty, and executed.

And for those wondering who the hell this Boris Nemtsov guy is and why they should care:

-from the same author who claimed his personal friend Dominique Strauss-Kahn should be let off the hook because of his position in gov't? -I'll pass on anything written by Bernard-Henri Levy, thanks.

As they say "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss", only in this case it's a bit more literal.
