Question about buffer wear

Hello; brand new guy here. I was trying to get some spare stuff together for my ARs, and I have a spare buffer or two. What is the average lifespan of a buffer? Do they wear out from getting whacked by the bolt carrier,or is the wear simply cosmetic? Thanks.

Don't know I've never worn one out. The most I've ever put through a single AR was 40K rounds........

Well, if a buffer will last for that amount, I doubt if I have anything to worry about. Thanks for the reply.
