I've been shopping for an inexpensive .223 bolt gun ($500 ish) I can use to target shoot out to 500 yds. So far I've checked out Remington, Savage , Weatherby (Vanguard). I would like a heavier contour barrel and either a laminated or synthetic stock. Secondary use might be varmint shooting as well.

To date I like the looks of the Vanguard S2. Am I missing any?

A browning A bolt, but for accuracy R700 is tough to beat at that price point

I like the 700 but I think I want them to get their trigger issue worked out first.

You can always look into a Howa, for the price they make a pretty good rifle. Accuracy keeps up with Remington and Savage. They can be found with heavy or medium contour barrels for a good price.

You might consider Tikka also

Thanks, that one I hadn't considered. Do they make a heavier contour barrel?

Thanks. Are they cheaper than the Weatherby Vanguard, which is essentially the same rifle?

Yes, the T3 223 comes in a heavy barrel for around $750-$800. The T3 lite is $550-$580

I know you were asking $500 ish but these are sweet rifles, I'll be getting one soon for my son in .243
I'm also a Rem 700 fan, Timney is the "trigger fix"

Anybody have experience with the Mossberg varmint predator?

I'm not in the market, but saw one at a show last year. Caught my attention because it uses AR mags.

I own this one: http://www.kygunco.com/howa-axiom-varminter-rifle-223-rem-24-barrel-5-round-camo-59414 I paid $750, but that included a 4x14 scope and rings. With Lupua brass and 8208 pushing 52 gr SMK's it will consistantly shoot 3/8 moa, and often 1/4" 5 shot groups at 100 yards. has been an excellent Coyote gun. The scope included is a Nikko- Stirling.

Pappabears Rem 700 5R in .223 is the most accurate gun I've ever fired.

My best friend has a Savage Model 10 Tactical with bull barrel in 223 that is a tack driver. I've really been impressed with that rifle.

I have a Savage Hunter with accu trigger, synthetic stock 20 " barrel. Haven't shot it out to 500 yet about 300 yards so far more then accurate enough. The 1-9" twist isn't good enough for the 75gr Amax's but 69 gr HPBTs shoot great and should get you to 500 easy. Not cheap though mine cost 7 bills!
