Russia-watchers including Michael Caputo and Tom Nichols have put forward a darker theory: Russia is in the middle of a coup, and if hard-liners win, Russian nukes could wind up pointed at the world’s major cities.

“One thing is for sure: while this plays out, the world is in far more danger than we were in February,” writes Caputo. “Pray for us all.”

Or if the opposition comes out on top during a coup, they leave the rebels in Ukraine unsupported, seek new rapport with the West and break the power of the oligarchs.

There is no reason Russia cannot and should not be friendly with its neighbors. And no reason the Russian economy shouldn't be booming with the amount of natural resources in their backyard.

Are you saying they're not already?

That was a quote from the article, I'd guess that as long as the Russians have had nukes that there has never been a time when they weren't pointed at the world's major cities.

Exactly what you describe Putin as? He's about as hard-line old Kremlin school as they come.

Well, I guess they could go full-stupid communism, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. I agree, what would a 'bad' Kremlin do? Invade neighbors, run bombers up and down our coasts, try to block our interests at every point and generally muck things up.....

ETA: Though I guess we all thought that AQ was about as bad as it gets until ISIS lowered the flaming bar.

Having read this thread to this point, I'll throw out what I heard on the shortwave last night.. I was listening to Radio Romania Int'l last night, and during their news broadcast (in English) They mentioned that American troops were there in the N.E. part of the country doing training with the Romanian Army as a part of NATO.. Romania Is very close to Ukraine... (they share a northern border with Ukraine)Does this mean anything? I don't know.. coincidence? Hmmm. One thing to note, I haven't seen anything about this on main stream media..

We have had troops in and out of Romaina for a few years. That's nothing new really. When the Germans started bitching about us still having troops stationed there a few years ago, Romania and a few other countries spoke up and volunteered space for new bases in their respective countries.

Not gonna lie, I did chuckle at this one.

On topic: Honestly don't care what the announcement is. They are desperate to stay relevant in today's world, and 'one-upping' our Traitor and Chief is about all they really have, which is a whole lotta nada.

Not saying this is it, but fairly common for dictators to lie doggo for a bit and watch to see who takes the bait and makes taking power noise. It's all speculation at this point.

OK, that makes more sense.. I didn't know we had troops stationed there.. The main reason I listen to Shortwave, is to try to get news that the media here won't report, or isn't outright propaganda.. and to a lessor extent, hear what the "other side' is saying, and then, make up my own mind. In the digital age we live in, a lot of people blow off SW, But, really there's a lot going on, on the airwaves...

I had hoped for something exciting, a coup would have been interesting. Especially if he had been overthrown by pro western oligarchs. Though it still doesn't see like we know what happened yet other than he's not dead and maybe still in power.

Im not sure the Russian people could get that lucky.

For Russia's national interests, and for the personal interests of average Russians, Putin has been the best leader in at least 100 years, probably longer. He is not a homicidal maniac like Stalin, he is not ineffectual like many Soviet premiers, he's not a drunken buffoon like Yeltsin. The west doesn't like him because he is a skilled and worthy adversary, and a lot of western countries are being run (nominally at least) by total idiots. I can name one such country, from which I'm typing this. Putin isn't good for the USA, but he is, relative to any predecessors, good for Russia. And extremely popular there.

Is he ideal or perfect - hardly. Is it good for us for supposed enemies to have skilled leaders - generally no, but it's not all bad since they are less likely to do something stupid, dangerous or destructive out of miscalculation, embarrassment or sheer psychotic rage. Imagine if Russia was currently run by a Russian of Obama's qualities.

Russia's Putin reappears after 10 day absence, laughs off 'gossip'

(Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin reappeared on Monday after 10 unexplained days out of public view, laughing off the "gossip" over his health that had erupted during his absence.

The 62-year-old leader met the president of Kyrgyzstan at a lavish Tsarist-era palace outside St Petersburg in his first appearance since Feb. 5 (Story corrects date of previous appearance to March 5 from Feb 5 in paragraph 2). His absence had fueled rumors he was ill, had been overthrown by the army or had even flown abroad to attend the birth of a love child.

"It would be boring without gossip," Putin said, smiling easily before television cameras. He looked relaxed, if pale.

His spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, mocked the press for its interest, referring sarcastically to the various rumors: "So you've seen the broken, paralyzed president, who has been captured by generals? He's only just flown in from Switzerland, where he attended a birth as you know."

Putin is great for Russians.

So long as you don't criticize him too much. Or are gay. Or Chechan. Or Dagestani. Or Ukrainian. Or don't like the mafia.

Then you get a nice side of Polonium-209 with your dinner or some delicious, late-night high velocity gilding metal, steel, and lead.

But maybe I've been mislead by the fascist Jewish kulaks that rule the West.

I did. Last night. I didn't get a lot of sleep. Frankly, it scares the pants off me. Putin has made it clear he won't tolerate any moves towards Crimea, And, they're ready. Here, in the U.S. the Shitstain in chief, and his neocons insist on provoking a war in Ukraine. This isn't going to end well, and we, the people are going to pay for it..

I can't think of an Administration I'd rather NOT have at the helm, to lead us in a nuke-throwing contest than the pack of ass-jackals we've got right now.

With the (lack of) Civilian Leaderahip we have right now, it is stunning this country is still functioning.

I question the validity of these stories. Can we substantiate that the child was in-fact a result of "love"? Methinks the child is the result of something other than "love".

Seems to be the wrong word.
