View Full Version : SBR Handguard/Rail Recommendations (for 10.5 or 11.5" barrel)?

I'm putting together a new upper with either a 10.5" or 11.5" barrel and was wondering what handguards/rails I should look at? I have a BCM KMR keymod upper and like it a lot, especially with it being lightweight.

I'm thinking about giving M-Lok a try this year. The design looks simple and there should remain ample accessories for a long while since MagPul is behind it.
Any suggestions for something lightweight in the 9 to 11" range?

I am very fond of the 10" Gen II SS handguard from MI.

8.6oz., slick sides, great fastening method.

Just a quick note if you end up with a KMR. A 10" KMR on a 10.5 inch barrel will not allow you to mount a suppressor as the muzzle device is slightly inside the upper receiver. I am not sure about on an 11.5 inch barrel as my 10" KMR currently rests on a 12" larue barrel and it looks as if the 11.5 would work, but I would see if someone else can test it for you if you plan on using a suppressor.

I'm in the same boat (11.5" build) and have been looking at options. My requirements are the longest rail possible with M-Lok and ability to mount an AAC suppressor, so you may have more options depending on need. Currently narrowed it down to the 10.5" Midwest SSM M-Lok and 10" SLR Solo Ultra Lite M-Lok.

I recently picked up an 11.5" upper and had a difficult time finding a handguard. I didn't want keymod, but if I did the BCM KMR looks perfect because the 10" is actually 10.5". The Centurion CMR is my favorite handguard, but it's only available in 9.5 and 11. By my measurements 11 is too long for a can and I think 9.5 is too short. I don't think the Geissele MK 4 or 8 is available in 10.5. I ended up ordering a MI SS M-Lok 10.5. It would've been an easier decision but I'm not completely sold on the barrel nut. I wish it had a cross bolt that would prevent it from sliding forward like other rails.

For 11.5s, the KMR 10 and also the URX 3.1 are good choices for getting close to the muzzle device with plenty of clearance for a suppressor. But with Mlok, it's pretty limited at the moment.

For 11.5" a 10" KMR is nice and light. For a 10.5" the 9" KMR works, but I prefer the 9" DD Lite III because I prefer quad rails.

BCM 11.5" with 10" KMR fits perfectly. Plenty of room for suppressor.

ALG EMR V1 and V2 are both M-Lok and come in 10" lengths. Handled them at SHOT and they are both lightweight and pretty cheap. Sub $150 retail from what i was told.

I went with a Geissele Mk5 9.5" on my 10.5" LMT. I have about a 1/2" of clearance to the back of my Saker 762.

I'm looking for my 11.5" as well and have it narrowed down to the above plus the ALG EMR V2 10"

I have this set up. It's pretty nice. I run KAC RAS on my FSB 10.5 however.

Try ALG Defense mlok rails. The barrel nut is a pretty slick set up.

All day! Ditched a 10.75" URXii and haven't regretted it for a second. The extra .25" of clearance is nice. 11.5" with 10" KMR:

(FYI - KMRs measure a bit longer on the sides so the 10" KMR really appears to be a ~10.4" rail)

In this pic, bottom of the rail is a true 10", you can see how the sides flare forward a bit more:

Has anyone run a Larue 10" on a 10.5" barrel? Looking at this option with a Surefire suppressor

As Boone posted earlier, this won't work. Barrel length is measured to the tip of the muzzle, but muzzle devices thread back to the barrel shoulder which is around .65" less than stated barrel length. From experience, that won't work with a Surefire can.

Your rail needs to be at least .7" shorter than the stated barrel length.

Muzzle device also makes a difference. I believe all SOCOM ones have a gap between the rear of the device and the start of the shoulder on the muzzle device, giving you an extra 0.2" of clearance or so. If you're going with a legacy can and mount you have to be more careful. The old brake does not have this gap so you lose that extra space and this could be the difference between the suppressor collar tightening all the way. Older FH556-212 and MB556-212 SB mounts do have this gap.

I figured the larue 10" would be flush unlike Boones issue where the sides protruded. I'm running the Socom FH / suppressor combo

It's the same issue no matter what. With a setup that tight getting the muzzle device installed with be a chore, as you won't be able to get to the wrench flats easily. And the can definitely won't mount. You need more clearance.

Has anyone run a Larue 10" on a 10.5" barrel? Looking at this option with a Surefire suppressor

I gave it a try with a 10.5" Noveske after talking with Larue to get the dimensions. I knew it was going to be real close and in the end it was just a little too long for my setup, probably 1/16".

So I traded for a 9" Larue which has worked well.

You need the .7 difference. Here is a true 13 rail on a 13.7 barrel. .64-5 ish works for a surefire socom though..

Thanks- I may switch to an 11.5 barrel for the extra rail space

I run a 10.0 Larue on a 10.5. The rail extends slightly over the threads ~1/8". I run a Specwar suppressor; it fits nicely because the mount has about 1/4" behind the teeth which extends it from the shoulder. If the surefire mount does the same thing as the specwar mount and the fast attach lock ring doesn't go too far back over the mount, you might be okay. A couple of shims might be able to make it work.

I had heard that it works with some SilCo mounts. Good info. Thanks. But the .5 is not enough for the Surefire SOCOMs. Shimming out a MD for a can .2 is not ideal. .2 doesn't sound like a lot, but twist off your muzzle device almost a 1/4 of an inch.. no thanks..

Bcm, centurion, geissele. I love the gen 1 geisseles, pricy but damn are they pretty, like a well made knife or something. Harder to find unfortunately. Centurion and BCM I like equally.

Personally I like Centurion CMR 9.5's and Geissele 9.5 SMR's for 10.5 and 10.3 barrels.
