Hard Chrome ?'s

I don't know where to put this so into GD it goes...

I have a pistol that's hard chromed and i need to take a few sharp edges off of it. if i file through the plating, will it continue to flake and peel over a larger area?

the part i want to file is down at the magwell area, so it's not really visible and i'm not really worried about the appearance there, i just don't want it to start flaking on the frontstrap etc.
