Well guys, the brown truck came at noon today delivering the long awaited Vietnam Era M16 Training Rifle, aka "Rubber Duck". You has visible signs of a lot of use as you will see by the pictures. The Teardrop FA has been damaged from use and abuse. The "dummy" lower is permanently attached to the Colt "C K" marked upper. It has an early flat square head port door. The barrel is marked "C MP C" (circa 1969-71). With the sum of most of the parts, this more resembles a XM16E1 upper assembly than it does an M16A1 upper assembly. The charging handle does move in and out. The "D" stock and handguards are in really good shape. Anyhow, I am really happy to have this.

Interesting, I've seen a lot of rubber duckies in my day, but never one like that. And certainly not one with a moving charging handle, and it looks like the selector does as well.

Where'd you find this and for how much?

I was alerted to this one on the ARFCOM Retro forum. It was listed on a Facebook classified group in Shreveport, LA. I picked it up for $275 shipped and it included the Imperial M7 bayonet. This one is unusual because most of the "Rubber Ducks" you see these days are all polymer or they have solid metal barrels. The one I have is using an upper assembly from a demilitarized Colt M16. The lower is polymer and the pistol grip is part of it.

My college ROTC (WCU) was STILL using those in the early '90's. I got to borrow one as a prop once: for a spoof TV commercial we were making in TV Production 2.

Wow, I remember using those in my military school back in 96-97. Brings back some memories!

I got the Rubber Duck cleaned up last night. I scraped a lot of black paint. Wheeeew! That was time consuming, but the result was worth it. Here are some pics after clean-up.

I think I am going to replace the broken FA to restore it to its former glory. If anyone has a line on an original Teardrop FA (1969-71), please let me know. I would really appreciate it.

Wow, that does look a lot better. Now hit it with some CLP and a toothbrush!
