Ok, so I am installing a new bbl. Now, the TM has us clamping the bbl in a vice. However, several makers offer different types of blocks for clamping the upper receiver in the vice. Is one better than the other? Thanks.

I prefer to clamp the upper, but don't guess it would really matter.

I just went off of gotM4's advice (HERE (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=7463)) and went with the DPMS one, you can get it from brownells HERE (http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=17094&title=AR-15+UPPER+RECEIVER+BLOCK).

gotM4 is effing Yoda, I am barely one of those little padowans that got slaughtered by Young Darth!

I have a clamshell type upper receiver block and it used to leave marks until I took a file and "deburred" the device a bit. The marks they leave are just plastic so they came off the teflon coating of the upper with ease. I'm also looking to get a DPMS style upper block so I don't have to strip my upper of the optics.

I have used 2 hard wood blocks when working on AR-10's. I never had a problem but prefer the clamshell type, if they made one for AR-10's I would've bought one.

I used the clam shell one, until Robb GotM4 recommended the BLOCK. I think it is a better product as you can use it for more things than just changing barrels. I use it as a third hand to install BUIS, aimpoints, and you do not need to "modify" them to install LaRue rails like you do the clam shell types.

I'm far from Yoda brother, just a student of the system myself.

I have used both methods. I like the the receiver clamp, But some people don't like it. As long as the alignment pin is tight in the receiver notch, it shouldn't matter.

I prefer the clam shell type. If you put a rag in between it and the upper, you will not scuff the upper.

I do not like the type that go inside the upper and you have to put a steel pin in the take down holes.

There is a risk of transferring unwanted torque to the upper on this type.

My uppers fit pretty tight in my Brownells clamp, I think if I wanted to protect it, I'd have to use something thin like a cheesecloth. The uppers I use are teflon coated so the marks come right off with a little rubbing and since I deburred the high spots and edges of the clamp, there have been no marks. I think both styles definitely have their place on my bench though.
