View Full Version : Photo For Book Cover?

I'm in search for a new cover photo for my next fiction Novella* and wanted something more action oriented than the last one (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?167590-Vacation-Gone-South-A-Novalla-%28my-latest-project%29). The pic attached is really cool I thought as an example, but I don't own that pic and didn't take it, so can't use it. Just there as an example.

Does anyone have a similar picture, or other they think would fit they want to donate or charge a small fee for? I know we have a lot of people here who seem adept at taking cool pics that might work. You have to own it/have right to it, and it's has to be a large enough/quality pic.

You might be better off commissioning the cover photo. Or at least buying it from a legitimate seller of photo stock. Lawyers are everywhere. It's always less expensive to pay them before you need them.

I have access to various pics or can buy them yes or have the cover produced etc. But some times people take some great pics they own and took personally that breaks no copy rights of any kind they might get a kick out of seeing used for the cover of a book and or charge a small fee.

Is this the action genre you were considering?

Google photo search "dsully composite photo". Does great action shots. You could probably commission a custom photo at reasonable cost. He has a thread over on WEVO.

Thanx for turning me onto his stuff. Here's the cover via a Dsully photo used for shooter. The original photo is Here (https://www.flickr.com/photos/clicksully/14504677226/in/photostream/) and his site (http://sully.photography/) has some great pics too.

I would buy that book based upon the cover art.
Perhaps a run of Posters as well?

Good to hear! In the book biz they say "covers is what sells books." Feedback on the cover of the first book (www.amazon.com/VACATION-GONE-SOUTH-Will-Brink-ebook/dp/B00VPC7PPK/) was that it was not action oriented enough. I liked it personally, but wanted to make sure this next cover took into account the feedback, and she (my graphics person) did an outstanding job per usual. I'm also confident in saying those who enjoyed the first one, will like the follow up even more.

Explore the movie covers of Andy Sidaris, or at least Roger Corman, to learn what sells.

I'm not a fan of the typeface. At a minimum the letter distressing shouldn't be uniform among repeated characters.

Love the photo! I like covers with small details in the background that make a scene. Not fond of the top line white letters. Looks too much like a cheesy ghost story- much like the 50's EC comic books.

It's interesting to note most of the biggest names in the genre, often use those generic top line white letters type covers. I guess if you get big enough as an author, no one gives a damn about your cover art/design.

Here's an example (really more of a horror title, but like I said, just a lazy example)

Just an example on non-uniform distressing. Something like this is probably closer to what'd you want, but likely not exactly
http://i60.tinypic.com/2hzok4.jpg

The uniform distressing looks cheap, which is why you often see it with pay-to-publish or from small publishers. Look at the original Day by Day Armageddon cover
http://i59.tinypic.com/v5eoau.jpg

then a couple later editions (I don't know offhand which of these came next)

The studio over-lit subject combined with black background, is amateurish. -just calling it as it is.

Given your book title, the first thought that came to mind was an old nautical map covered with a few water drops. On top the map would rest an old fighting knife and compass with the needle pointing south.

Not exactly an action shot, a bit more old school.

That's more old school similar in tone to the first cover, in that it's suggestive of action without showing it, which I like personally. I like your take on it, but it seems 'net based books in particular, do best with action oriented "in your face" type covers according to my friends who have done well in the digital domain in the fiction/action/sc fi/thriller genre.

I can say the current cover is congruent with what happens in the story itself.

When you go looking for a book on Amazon for example, unless you're already looking for a specific author, the cover pic that grabs you, and gets you to take a look at say the reviews and or write up will do better, unless you're a well established name in the genre (look at Brad Thor's covers, they are surprisingly bland) where it does not appear to matter much.

Thanks for the response Will. You couldn't fill a thimble with what I know about writing and book publishing. I also don't buy much off of Amazon. I guess I will have to start paying attention a bit more to advances in the world of literature.

Good luck with the book.

Have you even considered getting a screenplay to shop around?

Have you even considered getting a screenplay to shop around?

The first story reads like a screenplay I was told and is (as far as I know) a unique angle on the genre. It would need to be converted into a screen play which has specific formatting, length, etc different from a book. I have never done a screenplay, but yes, thought did cross my mind as a few others mentioned the story would translate well into a screen play. Shop around to who would be the next Q I suppose! I'm all ears if you wanna take on the screenplay of it!

There's many top selling authors now who only do e publishing, and by far, their number one (by miles) point of sales is Amazon via Kindle. My buddy Jason Halstead (http://www.amazon.com/Jason-Halstead/e/B0049AXHP2/ref=dp_byline_cont_ebooks_1)was a PJ, and IT guy, who's done very well in sci fi/fantasy for example on Amazon which believe is now his full time gig.

Remember, you do not need a Kindle to read the books and a free reader is downloaded to read them on any platform. I read them on my Mac lap top for example.
