View Full Version : What is your absolute favorite pistol, 1911's excluded.
What brand/make/caliber?
I don't have a hell of a lot of experience, but the full sized P320 I picked up a month ago seems better than a Glock 22 and USP 40C LEM at this point.

G19 with smooth trigger, Vickers mag release and Trijicon HDs.
Glock 19 Gen 4, Redback one sights, polished stock internals.

P7M8. I wish they would make one with an aluminum frame.
I wasn't expecting it, but my Hk VP9 has pleasantly surprised me.
My HK USP 45 and my Sig P229. It's a tie between them.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Always carried 45 for duty but started carrying a G34 with warren tactical sights and that gun drives itself.
P226 "NSW" Navy followed by my G19 Gen 3, smooth trigger and Ameriglo night sights.
Glock 17, 19, and 26 gen 4.... But if I had to narrow it down, I guess it's the 19 by default, as it splits the difference.
Either way, I like those three better than any other handguns on the market.

GLOCK. Gen 4. Anything non subcompact (sans 43). 19,17,21,20 are my favorites.

A well used Gen 4 G17 with a red fiber optic front and blacked out rear sight.
Beretta Brigadier with a "D" spring installed.
HK vp9, g19 is just a backup now
Bone stock P239 Sig Sauer 9mm.
I can't decide between my PPQ or my VP9. I had an M&P, never really warmed up to it. Actively disliked my Glock 19. Got rid of those two, still have the J-frame, which I also dislike.
SIG 226 NAVY 9MM original NSW model no rail.
GLOCK 19 cut down to a 26 grip.

That mirrors my thoughts.
Have nothing but positive things to say about my VP9.
Emotional favorite = 1911/DW Valor
Functional/EDC/CCW = G26

Well, besides the 1911, for pure "feels good in the hand", my favorite is the steel frame Jericho 941 or Baby Eagle. Mine is in .40S&W.
For "feel good, packs a whallop" I'll take the FNX 45. The pistol feels good despite it's size, and it's hard to argue with 15+1 rounds of .45 HSTs.
1) Steyr M9-A1
2) Gen 2 G19
3) PPQ
4) VP9
Since most folks these days seem to equate "pistol" with semiautos (even though revolvers most certainly are pistols), I'll eliminate the S&W no-dash 640 and 60-4.
Favorite for carry? Gen4 Glock 26.
Favorite to shoot (and fondle)? Colt 1903.
2001 Vintage Glock 21 .45 ACP.
It has been my workhorse in both my professional and personal life. It has had countless rounds through it and never once failed me. I have a Gen 4 21 as a 'spare' but no other .45 in the world will be quite like this one. I don't think there is any other weapon I own that I have as much confidence in as my 21.
It's the gun I plan to still have should I be an 80 year old man.
Sig P229R E2 in 9. Best pistol I've shot and owned, hands down. Carry it. Use it in formal classes. Love it.
Gen 4 G19 second. Good bit behind, but still a solid second to have. TFO TruGlo sights.
Glock 17 Gen 4, close second Browning High Power
Since my 1911 is out, it becomes a very close race between my issued G21SF with TruGlo TFO sights and the Sig P320 but they serve different purposes. The G21SF is by far my favorite non-1911 .45ACP. Once I get a holster for the Sig my G19 Gen4 gets put on back up duty.
Also since I just had this chat with my Dad I'll add his vote, the Sig P229R E2 in 9mm followed by his old Colt Trooper MkIII in .357Mag.
Glock 19 gen 3 and 4. Boring I know but it's a great pistol.

My vtac M&P 9 right now, love this thing!!
A Gen 4 G19 or G17 setup the way I like them. Mine have been reliable and accurate, no BTF issues and LAV and Hackathorn still seem to like and use them.

Walther PPQ, Dawson Precision front, 10-8 rear.
Since my 1911 is out, it would have to be a close tie between my modified G19, or my Browning HP.
TXPO
Full-sized: H&K VP9
Compact: M&P Shield 9
I carry whichever one fits with my clothing for the day, but strongly prefer having the VP9 onboard. If H&K ever makes a VP9c or similar striker-fired compact I'll be first in line to buy it.

HK VP9. Great pistol. Surprisingly accurate out of the box.
I have customized Gen 2 &3 G17 & G19s, 1911, BHP, a pile of MP9s, etc. All collecting dust.

Glock 19 is the 1 gun to own. My favorite Even though i dont own one in 19 would be the rtf2. Should have bought a Vickers gun. Damn
Since I can't say 1911... Beretta 92 in one of the many flavors, foremost, probably my 92G Elite II.
Excluding my 1911s, I would have to say I have become very impressed by my Wilson/Beretta Brigadier Tactical.
For general use, my Gen4 G-19 is my favorite carry.
My latest fav is somewhat of an oldie; SIG P220, Carry SAS. Good balance, very good DA/SA trigger (SRT), and accuracy on par with my 1911s. When I got it, I wasn't sure I would like it, but we hit it off immediately. This is DA/SA #3 or 4, but the first that I've really liked.
USPc .45, followed closely by the USP-T 9mm.
My VP9 has taken over as my favorite for now. We will see if that holds up when my USP 45 LEM gets out of layaway.

Absolute favorite - Custom S&W Model 65 3" .357 Magnum
Carry - Glock 19 with Viridian C5L
Browning Hi-Power. I have owned mine for nearly thirty years and put thousands of rounds through it. There are many handguns I haven't shot yet, so there may be something out there that's better, but the BHP has become a natural extension of my hand and firing it is as natural as breathing.
Beretta M9A1. Toss a 92G slide on it and it's perfect.
I want to like the USP pistols, but the compact version I have with the LEM trigger makes that somewhat difficult.

My W. German P228, bought new many years ago. Fit, finish, and function are still perfect and it shoots like a laser.
My FN hi power, hands down.
best I can narrow down:
Full size.45, FNP45 tac or HK45T
Middy, P30LEM 9mm
Sub, Shield 9mm
HK pro in .45 cal. It'll shoot anything you put in it.

If I were Dictator, I would make it illegal to own any other handgun.
I just can't narrow it down to 1. I love my Glock 34. It shoots so smooth, but my Glock 19 is just the perfect do it all gun. But then I have my FN FNX Tactical 45 that is a tank, shoots lights out and has 15 rounds of .45.... So I would have to say I have 3 favorites. Find you I used to drink the HK cool aid HARD until about 3 years ago when I switched to Glock. I have No HKs on my list at this point.

PPQ hands down for me. I like my VP9 but the PPQ does the same thing with a much better trigger and smaller size.

I love my factory Glock 17. I'm sure there's better pistols out there, but mine does everything I want it to.
Walther PPQ. I now have 3.
CZ 75 9mm....followed closely by the CZ p-09 9mm....followed closely by the P220.
Sig P226 in 9mm. #2 is a Sig P227.
My 1991 CZ-75 (pre-B). I vacillate between that, the Browning Hi Power, and HK P7, but right now it is the 75.
My fullsize HK USP 9mm is my favorite. Of all the handguns I've had and either sold or traded away, it's always been my go to handgun.
My Sig P210-2.
That's something I've always wanted to shoot.
My beat up SIG P226 9mm made in West Germany in '88. I've shot the snot out of it and it's given me phenomenal groups every time. I love that gun. I've been meaning to send it to Bruce Gray for a trigger job, but I can't bear to part with it and I'm beginning to wonder if there is really anything he can do to make it better. I'll be surprised if he can.
My 3rd Gen Glock 35. I like the longer sight radius, the longer barrel and for a .40 cal the recoil is manageable. My Glock 35 is less snap then my G22 and G22 Gen 4. I do not see a reason to a G35 in a gen 4 :D
My USP 45. Beast mode engaged.
USP 45 with LEM/Match hybrid trigger.
Glock 19 (preferably Gen 4) and current carry gun. Currently at 13,400 rounds. Maybe time to get another.

When not carrying or shooting 1911's, I tend to go back to Glock 9mm's.

German Sig Sauer P228 9mm manufactured in 2002. Original style internal extractor, night sights that still glow, and accuracy that is right there with my TRP & STI 1911 9mm. Just a dream gun...
My M&P that has been completely Apex'd. But I've only shot a handful of pistols.
Probably my M9, glock 19 close second followed by my sigs.
Sig W. German P226 9mm. Just a pleasure to shoot.
Sig W. German P226 9mm. Just a pleasure to shoot.
I'll second that !!
So, are these German sigs available anymore? I'm assuming everything on the shelf in the U.S. is made here.
HK45 closely followed by a SIG MK25

For personal protection: 3rd Gen G19.
For range and competition: 3rd Gen OD G34
No need for pics of Glocks, as one looks like the rest.
For recreational shooting/hunting: Custom 5" Model 29-2 .44 mag.
For critters big and small, Elmer Keith's favorite will handle it.

No picture. I will try and remember to get one when I visit next, but...
I have two favorites: first is the Smith and Wesson 57/58. My dad keeps one in his nightstand he bought 25? years ago. It's a work of art. That is based on naustalgia. The second is the Beretta 92. I can't shoot or carry the gun for anything. It's too big but I tried. Racks like its on perfectly tuned ball bearings. When I have more disposable income... it will be mine again. I bounce between a 92 with wilson treatment or a RMR for my 19+ a spare every time I get spare money, but it always goes into the vacation fund!

Glock 19 is the best all around pistol for me.
My favorite to shoot is my XDm .45 3.8" compact. My favorite to carry is a Shield 9mm.

The Wokka Flokka 19
If I were Dictator, I would make it illegal to own any other handgun.
If I were Imperator Mundi, I would ban people who ban things and send them on an expedition to the center of the sun. For science. (There will be a party and cake for survivors.)
As for absolute favorite? Hmm... so many good choices. There's the H&K P7 (any 9mm flavor), the P30 (I like it better than the VP9), the Browning Hi-Power, the SiG P225, SiG P210, SiG P226, Beretta 92G-SD, Wilson-Beretta 92G Brigadier Tactical.
On the practical side, the P7, P225, P210, and BHP can't mount weapon lights, so we'll eliminate them. With the exception of the Hi-Power, all are out of production and magazines are appropriately difficult to find.
The P226 now has a long extractor in most models, which is prone to failure. There are the German-made models, but they generally lack the ability to mount a weapon light and are collector's items, anyway. The Mk25 doesn't exhibit these issues. But then we get into the position of the slide lock and my thumb interfering with the slide lock, so we'll drop the P226.
So that leaves us with the Berettas and the P30. In out of the box configuration... I'm going to go with the Wilson-Beretta 92G Brigadier Tactical as my favorite non-1911 pistol. (Although I did get a screaming deal on my 92G-SD, so once I mod the G-SD to my taste, the practical differences will be minimal. Except that the Wilson comes that way out of the box, and there are more of them.)
I suppose I could rank the Beretta 92G-SD and P30 relative to each other based on how hard it is to get them where I want them. The P30 needs sights and P30S slide locks. The 92G-SD needs a D spring, metal trigger, rear sight, Elite hammer, metal recoil guide rod, and G10 grips. And maybe a factory 4.7" barrel. None of the mods for either are particularly expensive (except for the barrel, but the barrel is also the most superfluous modification) or difficult to do. I think I'll call it a wash. Maybe give a slight lead to the P30, but not much of one, due to the reduced capacity, increased cost, and increased difficulty of finding magazines for the P30... and the lack of a carbine that takes P30 magazines.
