View Full Version : HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME. I picked up a CZ Sp-01 today.

I picked up my first CZ today. I have shot a few including an SP-01 and I really enjoyed their characteristics so I have been stalking one for a while. I walked into Clyde's Armory and they had a brand new one and IT IS MY BIRTHDAY so there.

Handling the gun it has excellent ergonomics. It is basically a sort of weird cross between a high power and T-34. Being all steel the one I shot before soaked up nearly all the recoil making the gun extremely fast back on target. The trigger is good, probably close to 5 pounds and very 1911 like for pivoting trigger. The DA is heavyish but very smooth.

I will shoot it on Friday and Sunday and give you guys a report. Hopefully this will be a great blaster.

I would really like to get a leather holster for this (as is my preference). Anybody have a decent source?

Happy Birthday! I also picked up a CZ yesterday for my birthday, although it was more of the Scorpion Evo flavor. ;)

Congrats Greg!
I've never handled a SP-01, but I've heard a lot of good things about them. Having bought more than one firearm on, or for my birthday:rolleyes:, It's a good an a excuse as any for getting a new toy... Myself, I think I'm tapped out for the year.. I bought a Beretta Vertec (what a sweetheart) and a couple weeks later stumble into a deal on a lightly used police trade in Gen4 G17, at a price I couldn't refuse. If I buy any more pistols, I think the wife will start throwing things at me on sight. But, I digress. By all means let us know how it shoots, I'm curious..

Excellent! I owned one a few years ago and really liked it; accurate, reliable, super comfortable to hold and shoot. I eventually replaced with a Shadow as it was for competition only. I preferred the more businesslike look of the SP01, though. A great birthday present!

Congratulations Sir Bell. I knew you were going to get it sooner or later.

For holster, Alessi can do it for the 01:

I'm sure there are others. Check with the fine folks at Milt Sparks too.

Just found this old thread on the 1911forum. There is a dude selling an Andrews IWB holster for the 01, he wants $90 for it.

I know you said leather but I suggest you try the Blade Tech Eclipse. I've been using one with my CZ P07 and I've been very pleased with it. Mine is FBI cant, holds the gun close to the body, very fast (as shown in the Langdon class "Collateral" drill - 3.79 seconds) and secure.

That's the same seller that I mentioned earlier in my post, he's also posted on the 1911forum. The owb is gone, he only has the iwb from Andrews left.

I picked up a DM Bullard OWB holster they had in black. I have been going back more and more to leather the last few years. They are a little more comfortable, less noisey and easier on the gun. The only guns I run in kydex these days are Glocks (because who cares).

If you ever get the itch to do it, the CZC flat blade SAO trigger is awesome. Remove the disconnector, fit the trigger, and you have as close to a 1911 trigger as the gun will ever get. Overtravel adjustment and pretravel adjustment as well. I use a lye/water 10/90 bath to get rid of the coating they had on the trigger because the trigger wouldn't fit into my gun with it on.

Here is how it sits now, but with a 1.0 F/O front sight instead of the serrated front. The night sights now sit on my P02 for carry use.

Took her out after getting out of work early today. First things first, smooth function with not even a hint of malfunction. I tested it with VERY low powered Italian 9mm and low power steel Monarch. I topped everything off with Hollowpoints including a mag with staggered Gold Saber, Gold Dot, Perfecta and Monarch Steel just to see if it would choke shooting strong hand only. Nope.

First, here is my holster from DM Bullard. Very nice build quality. It was slightly tight out of the bag, but immediately broke-in. No tearing the finish up.

I also picked up some VZ grips (thank you Amazon Prime). I actually dindn't have these on the gun when I went shooting. The factory rubber grips are very nice, but I have never been a fan of sticky grips. The VZ's have a sharp cross-hatching, but they are quite a bit thinner and look better IMHO>

The gun is VERY easy to shoot. It is feels pretty plain that the weight of the gun in combination with the relatively light trigger is the real key to fast follow up shots. I shot it alongside my FNX, which is my preferred "modern" combat autoloader and the FN's recoil felt violent by comparison to the smooth impulse of the CZ. Now whether this translates into better times is anyone's guess, but I will sort it out with a timer on Sunday.

I do not like the supplied meprolights. They are too small. I am getting old and I am spoiled by the big ol' HD and Supressor sights on my FN's. Trijicon needs to get off their kiesters and make some HD's for the 75.

The sights hit a bit high at 25 yards. And shooting at the 100 yard large gongs the offset was pretty big. These sights are pretty good for target holds, but I prefer poi/poa "behind the dot" sights.

The safety is great. It is just as good as the FNX (and better than most HK safeties) but it is a little more difficult to engage (which is fine. I have actually put the FN on safe while swapping mags on a timer--not going to happen with the CZ)

The mags loaded easily. There was none of the thumbusting you get loading a Glock or FN magazine.

I am going to pick up some standard capacity CZ-75 flush fitting mags tomorrow. Just to see how it conceals.

The slide release functions VERY smoothly, almost 1911 like.

The trigger is pretty good, but not great. The DA is VERY smooth but the SA has a little bit of drag right before let-off. It will probably go away with shooting, or maybe I can get in there with my trusty dremel (j/k). Either way, the trigger is more than adequate. At this point my well-broken in FNX has a better SA, but an inferior DA.

Ran another 250 rounds of "Perfecta" Wally world specials through it. Today with the Vz grips. I did a little comparison shooting against a G19. Both guns, undoubtedly, are easy to shoot. The Glock, which is typical, had weak and benignly erratic ejection, while the CZ tosses it energetically far to the right. The recoil characteristics of the CZ are so soft that you can easily worry that you are getting a squib, especially after shooting the Glock or FNX. The CZ is extremely easy to get back on target. The beaver tail on the CZ is handy and allows for a high and absolutely repeatable grip. The G19's abbreviated rear tang allows you to ride up high enough to catch the slide (where a grip force adapter can be handy). That being said, all the guns are accurate and reliable. The CZ is too heavy to carry on a daily basis unless you are truly stoic. The G19 is, as is well known, is about as easy to carry as a full-sized gun can be. Basically, if you were already at the gunfight, you would prefer the CZ.

The glock employees said that claims of erratic ejection is hogwash !!!

Greg, would it be possible to get a picture of the CZ and the G19 side by side with the slide fully forward. From your picture in this post, the slide and dust cover profile of the 19 looks at least the same rough size as the CZ.

Thanks.

I like them both. I think I would prefer to carry the Glock but I would prefer to have the CZ in the gunfight. The Glock is trim and light but the CZ's weight sops up any semblance of recoil. Great guns.

Maybe you need to look at the CZ 75 Compact for carry, it is probably closer in size to the G19. Or better yet, the CZ P07, it's even closer in size AND WEIGHT to the 19 that people love so much.

And I'm never bored with your write ups. Keep it coming. Thanks for the picture comparison. In that picture, the SP01 really doesn't look that much bigger than the 19, I know it weighs almost twice as much.

I have a P02 for carry and it is alright. I prefer my shield for weight reasons, but the compact aluminum guns are accurate as hell and have the same egos as the larger gun. I only keep the shield around until I find something better in its weight class.

ETA I would trade the shield and associated stuff for a 642 or a 442 in a heart beat. I have tried carrying the shield around in my pocket and it is a bit buljy. I have never had that problem with a 642 I carried in my pocket a while ago.

I think it would be doable with gloves. I sometimes have trouble racking the small slide with sweaty bare hands.

The midget slide is one reason I sold my original CZ-75. I missed it, so I bought another one (and the compact model) a few years later.

Well, then the CZ 75 was made for you.
No need for the "reach reduction kit".
Having saved there, you'll have more dough for other hotrod items and/or ammo.

Your "midget slide" drops the bore axis.
That's one of the great features of the CZ 75 design.

They appear to be 100% identical, right down to the stepped base plate, but they will not insert.

Man, I had one CZ pistol in my past, and still kick myself for selling it off. After seeing all your pics here, I need another. Crap.

Tactical has a decocker.
Phantom is polymer framed.
Shadow is SAO with different sights.

These are just SP-01.

I believe the SP-01 shadows are still DA/SA + without the firing pin safety.

Tactical Sport models are SAO.

Greg:

What's the update on this gun? have you broken it already? or sold it?

I shot 50 rounds through it yesterday. Great gun. I had been shooting my FNX and I decided to swap over to the CZ for a few rounds. It is absurdly easy to shoot split's with. I burned through 15 rounds on a steel plate so fast my buddy Dan was laughing. Fantastic gun.

I will tally up the rounds, but I really have been focusing on my FNX for weekly abuse.

Interestingly, my new SP-01 has not proven as accurate as the run-over-by-a-tank Pre-B I posted above.

I certainly don't think I'm struggling with the Meprolights, since I have them on most of my Glocks and SIGs...

I will continue to work with it and see what's up.

I will echo that the recoil impulse is nice thanks to the length of the slide and weight of the gun, and that it's easy to shoot fast.

Today's tally 250 Monarch, 20 Gold dots.

Gun runs perfect and shoots pretty tight groups even with steel cased junk. I might need to invest in a holster for a light. It is more accurate and easier to shoot faster (both splits and transitions) than my FNX or Glock. However, I draw the FNX and Glock a bit faster--which I chalk up to weight and extra length.

Fantastic gun. I have a friend who is selling me his very lightly used Wilson Combat Beretta 92 Brig so I should have an interesting comparison gun soon.

I fixed it for ya!:D

The SP-01 is a great gun. I enjoy shooting CZs/CZ Clones more than even 1911s.
I hope to pick one up next year. I just spent my yearly gun allowance on a couple of Sphinx Compacts.

Greg, any further update? Really enjoying this thread.

After picking up a P-07 I am really enamored with the CZ pistols. Your review on the SP-01 has my really toying with picking one up or the P-09. Price would be a basic wash (pistol + 4 additional mags) if I went with standard CZ-75 16 round mags for the SP-01.

Any insightful comparison of the SP-01 vs. P-09? Main use would be gaming/nightstand and carry in winter.

Also interested in your opinion of the SP-01 vs. your WC Beretta 92G.

Still running great. The Sp-01 and the 92G are quite similar (and fill similar roles). The trigger better on the WC, but not as much as you would think. On the other hand I am a big fan of c&l so the Sp-01 is a bit faster. I really couldn't choose between the two. Which of course means the Sp-01 since it is quite a bit cheaper.

I'm assuming you use slide stop for reloads? If not isn't beretta so much easier for sling shot?

The Dumb Gun Collector

Yeah, I am pure slide release.

Yeah, I am pure slide release.

Being a lefty the universality of slingshot just makes more sense to me. Also somewhat discounts cz's and clones, even though I really like their triggers.

If I was a lefty I would gravitate towards ambi desgins like the FNX/S, HK P2000/P30/VP9, Walther PPQ etc. Slide lock is just so dang fast. But everybody has their own style.

Since the SP-01 is cheaper you could get some Cajun Gun Works or CZ Custom parts to improve the trigger to "level" the playing field a bit

If I was just getting into this and didn't have the years of reps doing it this way I would.
