I'm looking to put a new optic on my AR and I thought the Aimpoint PRO was my choice.
Lately I've been thinking a variable 1-4 or 1-6 might be better. I'm consider the PA 1-6, Vortex PST 1-4 with milrad reticle or Burriss MTAC. I'm just wondering if the variables will be lacking when it comes to CQB/reflexive firing drills. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have the MK6 with the the CMR-W reticle, it works fine at 7-25yds. Since it is FFP though, I keep it at around 1.5x so the reticle is a bit bigger. I do not use illumination until it gets darker out, since it is a bit tricky to use because you have to have your head perfect or it will appear to flash on and off, or wont look illuminated at all.

At what distances will you be shooting primarily?

I like to shoot drills so a lot of 25 and under. The range I go to also has steel out to 300 which I enjoy shooting as well. This will also be used for coyote hunting but I can always put my Redfield on it in the winter months. Thanks.

How old are you? How is your eyesight?

I'm about to be 42 later this year and I currently have 20/20. Vision could be a factor though in the future.

A am a bit older and my eyesight is much worse. I don't shoot with anything under 6x because I need that magnification to be effective. So that is how I approached it. I expect now that you crossed over the big "four-ough" you might see some decline in the same way others do.

My advice, don't go under 1-6x. Otherwise I think others can point you in the right direction.

You need to give the Leupold VXR 1X4 SPR a look and quit looking at the MTAC.

What specifically don't you like about the MTAC? I handled one and it seemed like pretty good glass.

If you're primarily shooting steel out to 300 and only at the range during the day, then a excellent little scope is a Leupold 1.5-5X with a duplex or German #4 reticle in a LaRue SPR mount.

I've had one for awhile with the duplex reticle and it's been a great scope for the money. I have it zeroed at 200 yard and can hold over about half the duplex bar to make hits at 300 with 77gr SMK type loads.

If you like to do a lot of close-in work, then nothing is going to act like an Aimpoint. Might as well have both. I do. I keep a PRO in a LaRue mount, and swap between the 1.5-5X depending what I'm doing.

I really want a MK6 too, but for over a grand less, this is pretty dang good and adequate for a 14.5" carbine.

Thanks for all the help. This does seem like the way to go. Dedicated optics using QD mounts would be better than 1 do all optic. Just means I'll have to buy the Aimpoint PRO then save for the scope. Thanks again and if anyone has more advice on scope choices I'd still like to hear them.
