View Full Version : KAC vs Troy drop-in carbine rail ?

Noticed that Troy has a 20% coupon for this weekend and am debating between a Troy and KAC drop-in rail for a LE6920. I had the Troy on a previous Stag upper that I sold to a family member a few years ago, I liked it especially since it had the 4 screws that held the two halves together, but I've never been able to compare it directly to the KAC.

Which would you guys prefer?

Thanks again and Happy 4th

You can also buy near new blem KAC RIS handguards for 80-100 if you do equipment exchanges.

Came here to post this.

With KAC's blems being so cheap, I can't imagine looking anywhere else for a drop-in carbine quad rail.

This is like asking BCM vs Del-Ton. Easy answer.
Get the KAC, no question.

I would go with the RAS as well. They seem like such a solid deal. I would probably even wait for one if it wasn't in stock.

For a 6920 it would be nice to have a cut out rail and have your light at 12 in front

^^^^^^ What JG007 said. The Troy Charlie and Delta are nice. The KAC is good stuff... If you like good and fat and good and short.

This is my favorite way to run a carbine-length rifle.

Thanks guys.

Are there any drop-in rails that have a cut out? I know the work to install a FF is easy, but I prefer not to cut on my 6920 or remove barrel nut even though I have all the tools do so.

If you want simple to install with the FSB, get one of these:

http://gearscout.militarytimes.com/2012/01/19/centurion-arms-c4-fsp-rail-system/

I think Centurion still sells them, but I am not sure.

Centurion doesn't have them on their site, but BCM has one listed (though out of stock).

I have a Midwest Industries FSP, which, while clearly not the same level of fit/finish/precision as the Centurion, it has held up well and is the same attachment method. I wanted the C4, but couldn't find one at the time.

Doesn't the Centurion require cutting of the delta ring and hand guard cap? I could definitely do that, but would prefer a drop-in option. I'm usually the first person to go cutting/modifying something but for some reason am hesitant to cut on my 6920...I'm sure I could get over it though in the end.

Been thinking the same thing. I bought an le6920 socom "2013 config" with the troy rail. I'd like to swap that out for a cut out rail so i can keep my fsb and have a longer purchase on the rail.

It does. As do Midwest Industries' Gen 2 Two-Piece Free Floats.

I was hesitant to cut on my BCM, but it really is a super quick/easy process, and a replacement from BCM is $9 away, should I hope to go back.

You don't have to cut the delta ring with the Troy cut out rail. Installed one for a friend a few months ago.

I have the Troy Delta rails on both of my rifles, easy install and I like the ergos. I also don't need a full rail at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions.

+1 this suggestion...it opens up other handrail companies...I went with Fortis Rev due to price and weight/ (http://fortismfg.com/ar15-fortis-REV-free-float-rail-system-14) over the Centurion C4 (http://gearscout.militarytimes.com/2012/01/19/centurion-arms-c4-fsp-rail-system/#prettyPhoto)
good luck

The Midwest fsp cut out rail is a great and reasonably priced option. Just buzz off the delta ring with a Dremel and bolt it on. I no longer have this rifle but I wish I still did. Short hand guards suck on non SBRs.

Funny story... I ran across your rifle in the pic thread and it sold me on that handguard.

I went with troy for my 16" bcm midlength because, while multiple carbine options, Troy had the only mid length cut out rail

I've been happy, and have the DD 9.5 partial cut out on my 11.5 bcm

I'm guessing the hand guard cap still needs to be cut off on this rail?

Thanks everyone

After further research I went with a Troy Charlie fsp cut-out drop-in rail. I got it for a good price (lower than Troy's direct price even with the 20% coupon), so I can always sell it later if it doesn't fit my needs and not lose anything/much. Thanks for all of the info guys...been busy the last few years and out of the loop so I didn't even know the Charlie/Alpha rails existed (being a 2 piece ff rail w/o mods required. Thanks again

You don't have to cut off the Handguard Cap, there is a clearance cut out in the rail. Absolutely ZERO!! Mods necessary for a Troy Charlie rail. Put on 5 or 6 of em for a few buddies

I wrote that article. You do have to cut the D ring, but in return you get a very well machined free floating rail.

Indeed, mine went on very easily with zero mods and I am very happy with the rail thus far, especially for the sub $200 price. I never try to 'justify' anything simply because I bought it and am quick to call something I bought junk if so be the case, but so far so good for the Charlie rail, a lot of real estate in front of the FSP and it mounts up solid with the provided 4 bolts and threaded tabs. If I notice anything negative come about with the rail I will be sure to update this thread.

The rail is the Midwest industries Gen 2 Two Piece free float rail. Here is the URL:

Im a big fan of Midwest industries rails. If, on a particular build, im not looking to spring for the cost of a BCM or Daniel Defense or Centurion rail (my go to rails), im going to probably use a MI rail. Best mid level rails on the market, imo.

Another KAC vote here. KAC is excellent quality, solid, and .mil approved.

Plus, I'd rather use an inferior product than buy from Troy. Fortunately, that's not a problem here.

Agreed. Great middle-of-the-road handguards.
