View Full Version : If it came down to 3 handguns???
Reading all these different threads on the Handgun side of M4Carbine.net I thought about what 3(we love TOP THREES..Don't we??)HANDGUNS would I keep for defensive carry if I had to boil it down to that.
My list:
1: A 1911 Full-Frame(Gov't) .45 ACP
2: A GLOCK 19 9mm, of course...go anywhere do anything pistol
3: A Smith J-frame(Airweight) as a BUG or extreme warm weather/min.clothes
carry.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?????????????????????????
That is a great list for urban use.
In a rural/wilderness area, I might consider adding substituting a large bore revolver for one of the others...
Good choices; mine would be:
- Glock 17/Glock 19
- Ruger GP100 4" Adjustable Sight model
- Ruger P89 (Yep, my P89 made shortly before Ruger chose to discontinue
them is, believe it or not, an absolute tack driver, and as reliable as my
Glocks)
Best, Jon
Mine
My back-up
The bag guy's
G19 just because it's easy to wrench on and parts are all over the place
P228 (I have multiples of these. Do they "count"?:D )
quality .22LR revolver. Smith makes one in Ti, IIRC. I forget the nomencalture. They seem very handy, though.
Generally thinking of combative/survival combos:
A Glock 19
A Glock 20
A Thomspson Center Encore in 308.

Interesting; for a while I carried one each of the above as my daily off duty weapons when fully dressed. I'd put the Glock in a fanny pack when jogging or going to the gym. Good choices, and I agree with DocGKR about the large bore revolver; my dealer is looking for a 4" Redhawk for me.
1. full sized 1911
2. P228
3. Ruger MkII
1. Full size 1911
2. Glock 19
3. S&W Mod.19-2,2 1/2 inch. (had his one for 39 years,sure won't part with it now.:) )
1) G17 (and I carry the AA .22 LR conversion too)...I'm counting that as 1
2) G26
3) 1911
if you don't want to let me count the AA .22 LR conversion then...
1) G17
2) G17 w/ .22 LR AA Conversion
3) G26

I would pick the following:
M1911 Govt model
Browning High Power
CZ-75
For you guys choosing glock 19 , why 9mm ?

Let's not start a caliber war here but the 9mm does everything I need it to do. It's as effective as any other round and is cheaper. Modern 9mm rounds have came a long way....

HK45 - cuz it goes bang every time
Colt Commander 45 - I love the 1911, all hail JMB
Ruger MkII .22 lr - its accurate enough to feed me

The three I'd have to keep that are in my stable:
1911
G19
454 Casull
The first two are for two legged problems, the latter for big four legged things I'd like to eat or prevent from eating me.
5" 1911. Does anything more need to be said? ;)
Glock 26. More concealable than a 19, and you have the 1911 if you need a full-size pistol.
Browning Buck Mark. (Or your favorite .22LR pistol/revolver.) Cheap practice/plinking.
IMHO, of course.
M&P 40 - my new favorite.
G27 - IWB CC.
S&W Model 60 - backup and fannypack or dayplanner CC.
M&P45 loaded with 230gr Ranger Ts
M&P9 stoked with 147gr Ranger Ts
Mod 586 charged with 180gr Partition Golds
I am the thesaurus, not the walrus.
This is a good question...I'd go with XD45 (service model) Beretta M9, S&W 629 (with powerport) To answer another poster, Why a 9mm?? Well, I figure in a SHTF situation, 9mm is probably going to be the most common round you'll run across, Police depts all over the country use it, The Military has been using for years, it's a standard NATO caliber, If anything you'd have a better chance of finding ammo for it over any other handgun caliber, and it'll do the job provided you do your part.
The top three that I own and wouldn't part with:
Glock 19
Wilson Combat 1911 "Pro Bobtail" commander
S&W #442 J-Frame
1. S&W Sigma
2. Kel tec P3AT
3. A shiney chromed .38 super 1911!

1. Glock 26 for daily carry w/Glock +2 base
2. Glock 19 - best all around gun in the world! IMHO

I thought about the Carbon 15 pistol, but I didn't think that's what the author was looking for.
9mm Browning High Power.
.40 caliber Browning High Power.
M1911 .45 Auto.
My 3 would be:
Two S&W J frames
1 340PD for pocket conceal carry
1 M60 with 3 inch barrel for conceal carry & woods gun
1 CZ SP01 9mm for when a high capicity non-conceal carry gun might be needed
Only 3?
Glock 35, 23, 27.
I don't own any of them, but since you limited me....
Alternately, Glock 20, 23, and 26.

Short answer: Small enough to conceal, big enough to be "shootable", exceptional reliability, and excellent magazine capacity for the size.
My list:
G34
G19 (or G17 w/ grip chop for G19 mags)
G26
Not a very exciting list but it'd cover my bases.

Almost exactly the same list came to my head as I was clicking on the thread! I have:
1. Springfield Armory PX9109LP (Parkerized Loaded with some tweaks) for which I would like to get a .22lr slide
2. Walther P99 QA (same as a Glock 19 but with better ergonomics IMHO)
I will have a some sort of light weight J frame .357 Smith here soon, though I don't know which one yet.
I think that's a great list!

P7M8. The finest CCW handgun in the world. As Ken Hackathorn calls it, "The Porsche of handguns."
+2 more P7s
I just had a realism flashback. Sadly the average gunowner here is entiteled to own just two handguns & semi-automatic rifles- more is granted only for a "good reason" plus proof (hunting permit, competition lists, etc.)! At least conversion kits don't take one place. So many guys choose Glocks in 9mm with conversion kits in .22, .40 or .357Sig. Some add shoulder stocks to make up for not having a carbine.
1. M1911
2. M&P9c (for ccw)
3. CZ85 combat (w/ .22lr Kadet conversion slide -- I know, that makes 4!).

If limited to three, I'd keep the following;
1) Full size 1911
2) Glock 19
3) S&W 642
There does seem to be a general trend developing here...
1) Gov't (5") 1911: Ed Brown bobtailed Special Forces in carbon steel, NP3'd by Robar, no slide markings
2) Gov't (5") 1911: Ed Brown Kobra, blued (>5k round count now, sweet & slick!)
3) M&P45, FDE, SOCOM version (stipled, NP3'd & trigger tuned by Dan Burwell)
Smith & Wesson Model 66, 4" barrel.
Glock 17 or 19 (reliability and availability of accessories and parts)
Browning Buckmark .22.
Having only 3 handguns would be gay.....

Out of what I have:
1) 4" barrel S&W Model 65. A classic, rugged, powerful and accurate revolver that fires some of the most easily available (.38 S&W Special) and most effective (.357 Magnum) ammo on the planet. It is also easily concealable.
2) 3" barrel S&W Model 29. Same as above but even more power.
3) M&P9c. Every day, go anywhere, do anything handgun. Easier to conceal than a J frame, especially in a tuckable holster for deep cover. Over twice the ammo capacity of the snubbie and lightning fast reloads.
In general, you should keep an eye toward more common systems with good availability of parts and support. You may want look at general purpose guns that you can use in all aspects of shooting - competition, defense, TEOTWAWKI.
1. A full size fighting handgun. Ideally something you can actually fight with if you can't get your hands on a long gun. If you are buying new, you could do worse than a Glock 34 with some 19rd mags.
2. A deep concealment back up gun. A J-frame, Khar, Kel-tec or the like.
3. Ruger Mk II - suppressed or capable of being suppressed - useful for rats, squirrels, and other 'pests.'
From Hunting to CCW my needs are filled....

Hmmm, i'll go out on a limb. Even though I am not a huge glock fan, I chose to carry a G-27 .40 s&w for off duty carry. We use the G-22 at my agency, so I chose the G-27 because I wanted a sub compact and it will accept and function with the full size magazines for work. So it is my backup on and off duty. I might have otherwise went with the Glock subcompact 9mm just for a few more rds. I do have the pierce grips so I get 10+1. I carry two extra mags just as a habit. I carry this year around. As for something to shake up things I like my USP-CT LEM .45ACP when I want something a little bigger, and when I want to open carry I love a 1911. There is something about cocked and locked with some punisher grips that is just intimidating to people. For more shock value than practicality. My friends and co-workers ask me out of all my guns I own and have owned why the Glock 27 for backup all the time? Simple........it will go bang, I only paided 510.00 for it new with trijicon nite sights and two mags (got to love the LEO discount through Glock distributors), and its ugly so who cares if I scratch it, if it gets rust on the surface from sweat, if I drop it on concrete, gets covered in lent, or if I use it as a hammer on someone's head.......lol, just kidding. But seriously, I paid too much for the H&K and the Colt to abuse it. More than likely if I have to use it, it will be within a few yards anyway, so full size doesn't matter, besides I have to qualify with it out to 25 yds. So here is my list, drum roll please.............
1.) Glock 27
2.) .45 ACP (Either the H&K or the 1911 Govt)
3.) Kel-tec 9mm (Standard cheap scumbag gun, makes a great throw down gun......)

When the City of Chicago legislated to not accept further registrations of handguns, police officers were still allowed to register three handguns, since sidearms are personal purchase there, not issued. The number three was a curiosity to me, so I asked my friends who were police officers where that number came from.
The universal answer was: Your primary weapon, your back up gun, and the one you leave at home for your wife. Since non-police ranges and training facilities in and around the city were sparse at best, a guy's wife got very little, if any, familiarization/practice other than in the basement. A number of my friends chose .22s for the tertiary weapon for that reason.
