"LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) - The unknown blast came during rainy season in the desolate New Mexico desert.

Most residents of the historic Hispanic village of Tularosa had no phones or radios. So when word spread that Army officials said it was just an ammunition explosion, anxious residents relaxed despite the raining ash.

It wasn’t until after the U.S. announced it had dropped an atomic bomb on Japan that Tularosa residents learned scientists from the then-secret city of Los Alamos successfully exploded the first atomic bomb at the nearby Trinity Site on July 16, 1945."

10 years ago today I had the opportunity to visit the Trinity site for the 60th Anniversary. I remember holding a piece of trinitite (glass created by the heat from the explosion) and seeing the remains of the big steel canister "Jumbo" that was built to contain the plutonium in the event of a failed detonation. At ground zero there is an obelisk with a plaque commemorating the event next to what is left of the test tower. I will have to see if I can dig up some pictures.

It was amazing to be able to stand at the exact spot that the Atomic Era began.
