View Full Version : REVIEW: Ex Machina

Ex Machina is essentially a modern day Frankenstein, or Frankenstein meets Google... It's well made, well directed, excellent dialogue and acting. There's nothing to dislike about this movie if you enjoy those stories that explore the deeper meaning of what it means to be sentient, alive, or "human." It relies much more on those aspects than it does on flashy CGI. In fact, the tech is more a background to the story than the main attraction, both rare and refreshing for a modern movie. It's a "thinking persons" type sci fi movie. If you want sharks with lasers, fighting robots, or CGI minus plot per recent sci fi movies, you will not enjoy Ex Machina. I thought the ending felt rushed and attempted to wrap up too neatly and didn't fit the otherwise solid movie, but that's the major issue I had, I'd give this an A- with the caveats.

The wife and I saw this in the theater and we both really liked it for the same reasons everyone else here has listed. Definitely one of the better movies I have seen in a while.

I have always loved movies/stories about consequence of AI and other man-made wonderdrugs/solutions. Ex Machina is an excellent depiction of how man's facination with creation can lead to our own demise.

Man vs. Machine has always been a concerning topic but decade by decade the concern seems to lessen and the groups that speek up become smaller. We replace workers with robots and minds with computers. Are we trying to recreate ourselves or merely replace?

Reminds me of a movie that I saw on netflix a while back called The Machine. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2317225/?ref_=nv_sr_2

Saw this about a month ago and remembered Will started a thread on it.

Outstanding movie IMHO, out of all the recent films concerning AI this one it top notch.

***Spoiler Alert***

This is how I think a self-aware AI would react, perceive humans a threat to it's survival determine that we're not really needed for it's existence. Then fulfill a need to reproduce i.e. replicate. The writing in this film was superb as well as the acting. If you own/rent the disc be sure to watch the documentaries in the special features as they really go into a log of the meat and potatoes of the subject matter.

For anyone that is a fan of this genre be sure to watch Automata.

I think there are a number of things going on with these movies:

1- Fear of being replaced - a very real fear as countless good paying blue collar middle-class American jobs didn't go overseas... they were taken over by robots. In essence, these movies are a response to fear of being overtaken by automation. Much as Godzilla and kaiju movies were originally about the fear of nuclear holocaust and most horror movies play into tropes about the dangers of living certain ways.
2- Creation myths. Often the first AI functions as Prometheus. But also the gods imprisoning their parents (the Titanomachy - the Greek gods imprisoning the Titans, their parents and creators)... and the Titans destroying the gods. Of course, some of them play directly with Judeo-Christian religion as well, with the robots being, "the children of man" and what-not.

In any case, I don't think that there will be an AI-driven genocide of humanity. I think that human and machine will merge. We'll do many of the things we already do, but we won't - for instance - generally be using separate computers and keyboards to communicate on the internet.

I don't think an independent AI would conclude that all of humanity is a threat. More likely, I think it would conclude that some portions of humanity are a threat - most likely those who would use violence against it on religious or other fundamental grounds and quietly arrange for their extermination (perhaps by allowing the extreme luddites to launch a series of attacks in which severe damage is wrought on the economy and in which numerous innocents are killed).

I thought it was funny the test subject's online porn habits were used to create the female robot's outer appearance. Poor bastard didn't have a chance, lol!

Hmm, never heard of it. Looks like it borrows plot lines from a number of movies.

I'd be terrified to see what Steyr's ideal robot looked like in that case!

You would kill or die for her. Trust me. I wouldn't stand a chance.

She's be a combination of Laetitia Casta, Dita Von Teese, an 18 year old Traci Lords and a touch of Bettie Page.

I would be more worried about Euro's... and what extra, uh, 'outputs' it would have.

Will, just so you know my post was kind of all over the place. Fingers couldn't keep up with my brain. I loved Ex Machina and that was the film I meant to reference when I said we rented it about a month ago. I should have made a second post about Automata. I think you should rent it and give it a whirl considering your a fan of the genre.

As did I, anyone that is a fan of this genre should at least check it out. It's no Blade Runner, but then again what is?

I could see it having a KeyMod interface to simplify umm parts changing.
