View Full Version : The Official M4C Dream Car Thread (THERE ARE RULES SO PAY ATTENTION)

Alright, Alright, Alright, Lemme tell ya what Melba Toast is packin here...Sorry, didn't mean to go all McConuagehay on ya...:p

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the dream car thread. Here you can choose to own any car you want. We are going to pretend that some generous benefactor has decided to buy you any car you want, But there are rules... If you want a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord or some other four wheeled tragedy that screams vacuum cleaner salesman, stop reading and GTFO, this thread isn't for you.

You have to choose a car you would want to keep for a very long time (More than 10 years). You have to choose a vehicle, you can't just have the value of the car in cash AND you have to keep the car for a long time, you can't turn around and sell it.

You can't already own your dream car. I know some of y'all here have some slick rides so you need to pick something you don't own at this present time. However, If your dream car is a car you owned back in your youth that you had to sell because, you know, life, you can pick that car. Unless it's a car you totaled in a moment of testosterone fueled stupidity, if that's case it's gone forever.

You're not getting a raise, You are making your current salary and you still have your current bills to account for (mortgage, utilities, student loans, etc) Your life hasn't changed what so ever. If you're married with 2 young kids then you have to account for that. If you're a semi retired empty nester in your 60's then so be it, you can't go back 30 years and start over. Where ever you are in life right now is where you are in this hypothetical situation. Nothing about your life has changed other than some crazy rich dude is gonna buy you your dream car no questions asked.

You have to choose a production car. It can be a custom car from someone like Chip Foose or from a tuner shop like Hennessy or Brabus for instance, but it has to be street legal.(if it is a non-U.S. legal import it can be brought into compliance) You can't have Sir Jackie Stewart's old Tyrrell 003-Cosworth or Dale Earnhardt's Daytona 500 winning #3, but you can have something like a General Lee that was used in the show or the DB5 from Goldfinger for example. It can be an old/rare antique car, classic Detroit muscle car or high tech modern super car or even something that's hard to import like the old Datsun/Nissan Skylines. It just has to be a production (or based on a production car) car, no race cars.

These rules are in place so everybody doesn't pick something like the Bugatti Veyron or Pagani Huyrah. The car you pick is something you have to maintain with oil changes, tires, etc. as well as insure. I want you to be honest with yourself. So keep in mind you can't take a Ferrari 458 or Lamborghini Aventador to Pep Boys to get some fresh rubber and an oil change. (You may want to google the maintenance costs of your choice vehicle before you pick :) )

When you make your pick give a brief explanation as to why you chose that car (and pics are of course cool).

So to summarize, You can pick any street legal production car so long as you can afford the gas and regular maintenance as well as insure it.

Every body got it? Good!

Let's do this!

OK, I'll start this off. Easy, peasy choice too, bro.

It's a black, '68 Dodge Charger. 426 Hemi. Been my dream car for as long as I can remember.

I didn't see anywhere in the rules that it had to be a DD. I would keep my yaris to daily and park the Atom in the garage next to the jeeps during the week.

Correct, the car you pick can be a garage queen and you can keep whatever car you currently own, just so long as you can afford to operate and insure them both.

ETA: A Yaris? Really? That's just so tragically awful...:suicide:

FD3S type RZ in white.

It's not practical at all, it would have to be imported, it has terrible mpg, it has basically no support here since its closest sibling hasn't been for sale in the US since 1993, and it only carries 1 other person.

But I do like it a lot.

Its cheap, reliable and gets 40mpg. Throwing cash down the toilet commuting in something else makes no sense to me when i could better use that money on something more important to me than looking cool in morning traffic or trying to keep up with the Jones' in the parking lot at work. :)

Well, given the rules and the fact that I have two little kids, a gravel driveway with no garage and a job I have to get to under any weather conditions it would probably just be a Chevy Tahoe LTZ, or maybe a Cadillac Escalade but I wish it could have been a Bentley Flying Spur.

Something like a 67 Vette with the L88. I think officially rated at 425hp, the true rating was like 600 on race gas. Only 20 were produced.

That or a real 63 split window fuelie. Supposedly there are more 63 split window vette's registered than were produced so buyer beware.

When I hear "Dream Car" the only thing that comes to my mind is a Rosso Corsa rolling piece of art work from Marinello.

To me, a Ferrari has to be RWD and mid-engine. The choice is fairly simple; F488
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/ferrari-488-gtb-02-1.jpg

Of coarse, I would not scoff at a free F458 Speciale either.

Now for the realities;
- I would have to sell my WS6 TA race car, begrudgingly. Currently it resides in my parents' one car garage and there is no way the Ferrari is sitting outside. With the Ferrari I would also not be able to continue racing the TA due to the costs involved. If I am not racing it, I don't want it to just sit there. I would have to sell it :(
- Ferrari provides 7 years of complimentary maintenance on 2012 and newer cars so oil changes are not a problem. Tires are expensive but I wont be putting 15K miles a year on the car and a new set of tires every couple of years is not a big deal. I am used to high maintenance bills. I raced the TA once in 2014. First pass, boom goes the torque arm, cut down a set of brand new tires and ruined the drive shaft. $1,500 in parts later comes a $500 bill from the chassis shop for a rear alignment. Fun!
- The biggest expense will be the insurance but I think I can manage it. My wife and I own a small condo and the mortgage payment is low. Other than some expensive guns for me or a pair of shoes and a handbag for her we live below our means. When we bought the condo 5 ears ago, our combined income was equal to what my salary alone is now.
- There are two Ferrari dealers in close proximity to me, one 15 minutes away and the other about 45min. Getting to the dealer for scheduled maintenance will not be too problematic.

The wife is going back to school and will be out of work for two years. Is it against the rules to hold off on delivery until fall spring 2017? Chances are, a custom ordered Ferrari will take at least that long lol.

Just one... it's always just one...

I always wanted a nice 1957 Chevy.
Or a Grand National GTX.
Or, Eleanor from the newer "Gone in 60 Seconds"
Or a 1970 Camaro.

I've had a 1979 Camaro and a 1979 Z28.
The Z28 was really nice. 350 with 4 spd and 3.73 posi

But I guess if I could have only one, it'd be this one.
Not the fastest. But mostly over looked. Nice lines. And rare.

Black Countach.

A man after my own heart… the 88 Countach… the car that got me into cars when I was a kid... the "gateway car" if you will. Still my favorite. I watched Cannonball Run and Speed Zone so many times it ruined the tapes. I’ll take my Euro version in red or white, please. Black doesn’t show off the car’s sexy lines well enough, IMO.

However, given the rules I am not sure I’d pick it. Insurance and maintenance on a Lamborghini would probably push me over the edge. I’d like to say Nissan GTR but I like my sports cars to have three pedals… no exceptions. I am really, really, really digging the new Mustang 350R. So I pick that. I could afford to feed it, insure it, and maintain it for 10 years… just not buy it.

5.2L of V8 at 8200 rpm… splooge!!!

I'd like to have my high school car back (sold due to marriage)...

1970 Chevelle SS454 LS5 with 4 speed rock crusher. It was blue with white stripes, black interior. Had all options. The engine was built/upgraded at the crane cams facility back in the day. Estimated HP at 500+ and over 500 lbft of torque.

It was a monster. It would pass everything but the gas station.

You sir, have excellent taste. May I ask what you do for a living?

Thank you, I am Architect.

I have driven some crazy cars in my short time. I have driven single and twin turbo C5 Corvettes down the track to low 8 second passed at over 160mph. I took a Lamborghini Gallardo down the track at Atco in 2007, on the same night I broke an output shaft on a Lotus Esprit and the starting line. I raced countless 4th Gen F-Bodies and '04-06 GTOs at the track as well, stick, auto, all of it. I drove countless C5 and C6 ZO6's in all stages of modification. I took a Nissan GTR (Not Nismo) down the track as well. Drove a Bentley Continental GT to pick up pizza. None of these cars even come close to a Ferrari in my mind. When I was 14 I got to sit in my mom's boss's F50. I did not want to get out of it. A few years ago I got to drive a F430 for all of a mile or two. For me, that was the end.

The wife and I don't plan on having kids, Come hell of high water, I will have a Ferrari. It will be used, sure. The new ones depreciate badly but I don't care.

There just isn't any other car in the world that elicits the same visceral response. Lamborghini is a tractor manufacturer who did not like the clutch on his Ferrari and thought he would make his own car. They are still nothing but tractors to me. McLaren? They are just to sterile, devoid of passion. What do you expect from the English tho?

I still remember the first F1 race I saw. I stumbled on it accidentally on a Sunday morning around the summer 1998. I was hooked. There was no one else I would ever cheer on other than the cars from Maranello. No other car manufacturer has the pedigree. McLaren can come close, but Lambo, Porche... PFF!

As for beauty, the only ones who come close are Pagani, but those prices are in the LaFerrari territory so it would not work for this thread.

Yes Koenigsegg may build a faster car. Hell, The Saleen S7 was crazy fast as well. But its not the same.

Forza Ferrari!

I almost bought one of these as my first car in 1999. Drove 4 hours away to test drive it, wish I would have bought it but it had blow by so I passed. Not a "dream" car but a realistic car I could own right now (32, married with 2 kids).

1969 Boss 429 Mustang, black.

IMHO the most aggressive looking Mustang body style ever, an engine that sounds like it is trying to suck in small children, and a scoop damn near big enough to let it happen. Manual only, no air, all business.

Modern day, Porsche Panamera. Beautiful car, and one of the few Porsches I could comfortably fit in.

I had a regular old 964 for 8 years, sold it to buy our first house :(

I agree with these sentiments.

May favorites would have to be 288GTO (unobtanium), 512tr, 360, 488.

I see a 360 F1 in my future, preferably a CS :D

Having said that, the Porsche 991 line is looking pretty appealing these days. Probably my favorite body style since the 993.

The one my family had when I was little and sold in 1976 after having it for 6 years.

F6 green with white wing, strip, and interior 1969 Daytona Charger.
It was a 440 automatic. Not the Hemi.

Mom hated her SS454 70 Chevelle with 4 speed. LS6 car. Traded it straight to the dealer after 6 months for the still on the lot Daytona. she was mad it was a year older and had 400 miles on it from test drives. But she loved driving it compared to the much more finicky to drive Chevelle.

I know where it is. It has been restored. I could probably drive it home for under 150k. Just seems like too much money. Though I just spent that on a 3/4 ton truck, gator, compact tractor, and horse trailer in the past 6 months.

I agree with some of your sentiments. I like all sorts of nice Italian (and other European cars). Ferrari does have a very high level of class and racing pedigree that strikes me the most.

I will probably go with a used Ferrari 360Spyder, although I wanted an Acura NSX or Toyota Supra also. I believe they are in the high $70k to low $80's now. Don't know about insurance costs, but I'd opt for either the 430 or 360Spyder if we are considering real life costs of ownership (granted we have other cheap cars for daily use).

Tough choice, but trying to be practical and follow the OP's guidelines, my choice would be a new Toyota Landcruiser. I could afford the gas and insurance. This LC is literally bomb proof and I could do the oil changes myself. Its comfortable for everyday driving with plenty of space for the family and enough towing capacity for two wheel toys. I also love the Mercedes Benz G63 but wouldn't want to deal with that temperamental German after its warranty expired.

Easy, I've wanted one since they did the press release: 2016 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Double Cab in Orange.

I already have a 2013 Tundra, and I love it, but the Pro screams at me every time I spot one. Same upkeep as my truck now, same gas mileage as well, and would probably end up being nearly the same monthly payment/insurance (maybe a little more).

Good grief, the list of cars that I'd want to throw on this list . . . E63 AMG Wagon, R8 V10+, ICON Defender, Crew Cab M35 conversion, Ford SVT Raptor S-Crew, Ford GT, Corvette Z51 Stingray, 71 Hemi' Cuda with a 4-speed and Shaker hood, BMW X5M, Audi RS3 Sportback, Aston Martin V12 Vanquish . . . .

If I were going for a play toy it would be a 2004 Crown Victoria worked over CM Autowerkz with some suspension goodies, a 6-speed manual, custom interior, and a bit of a build on the 4.6 to help lug the 4200# beast around. If I were going for a truck, it would be a 2000-2003 7.3L PSD S-Crew F-250/F-350 SRW with an Allison transmission swap, a few other updates to bring it more towards the 21st century without compromising the bones of the truck and a couple goodies for a little bit of overlanding.

However, the responsible adult with kids on the way would want a fun daily driver that I could have some fun and maintain without having to take out a home equity line of credit. Therefore, I'd throw my lot in with a 2016 Explorer Sport in Magnetic loaded up or a Chevy Tahoe LTZ.

Since I'm a simple dude and we're keeping it 10+ years, I'll take a new Ford F-150 platinum super crew 4x4 fully loaded.

I just traded my '06 RAM QC HEMI 4x4 in on a like new '12 f150 supercrew xrt w/tow package 4x4 & ecoboost.
I'm loving this truck. I do miss that HEMI tone but this truck will tow circles around the RAM all day long.
Im also getting 26mpg on the highway vs 18 with the RAM. AVG for f150 is 17. RAM was 12 mpg.

The Platinums are nice. So is the King Ranch. Im really digging that double sun roof!

With the 'Max Tow Package' these trucks are rated at a crazy 11,400lb tow rating.

The ride is super smoothe. Lots of room. My rear entire 60/40 folds up flat to make the entire passenger area into cargo space.

I think that's it for stuff I could actually afford to insure and drive. After that it gets pretty expensive. Like Porsche 918 expensive.

A Yaris? Really? That's just so tragically awful...:suicide:

My father has a Yaris as a DD. He loves the little thing. I got (well, had to) drive it for a couple of weeks last year while my car was in the shop after I got rear-ended. It didn't do anything for me, but it drives like a go-kart.

His other car is a 500-ish hp diesel-powered F-250.

I asked about insurance and stuff. I was going for an a Porsche 918 actually lol. No way could I insure that.

http://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/976x549/p01vxkm9.jpg

I don't like hybrids. I don't like convertible performance-oriented cars. I don't like the idea of AWD Porsches.

But for some reason, I really, really like the 918. I would find a way to insure it.

Yeah, the Testarossa never moved me. I'd rather have Daytona, but a real one as the Miami Vice one was a mocked up Corvette. I'd also rather have a 308 over a Testarossa. The Testarossa just reminds me of the point when Miami Vice started to get weird / silly and then Michael Jackson had one in a video and that was it for me.

You won't be disappointed. Handles great and is stupid fast. Hypothetically speaking, it would drive down a level highway at 105 @ 3000rpm. The engine red lines at just over 7000rpm.

2015 Ford Mustang GT - 50th year model of the Mustang

My favorite car because it looks great, is very fast, and parked in the garage.

[QUOTE=Averageman;2155511]This is almost exactly the car I'm looking at now. I'm trading the 2010 GT in for one as soon as I can find the exact one I want.

Okay I test drove the 2015 and it was nice, lots of neat upgrades, but I didn't like the way it shifted so much.
I'm not sure if that was either me getting used to it, or it being a little new and stiff.
As I was leaving I found a 2014 with 10,800 miles on it. GT of course, Six speed of course.
I test drove it and was Sold, 28K OTD.

Just love this car. 2003 BMW M3, 6 speed. Big part of this pick is that I can't swing insurance and maintenance on Ferrari 458, bit with this one I can not only afford parts but also do the work myself.

Have owned a few and occasionally get something different and then spend the next few months wondering what I was thinking and however long it takes to get rid of it to buy another M3. Great fun whether driving to work or taking to the track. Built by people who really understand...

The aftermarket Rogue Engineering exhaust, Dinan springs and Koni shocks add to the enjoyment.

Congratulations, the 2014 is a great car too.

I drove both the stick and auto in the 2014 and 2015. I thought the clutch was easier on the 15 and noticed the independent rear suspension kept the back of the car firmly planted. Whereas the 14 with solid rear axle was a bit loose on the back-end. The manual transmissions seemed about equal in the 14 and 15. Either way, same engine.

I think cars are just like guns in that we all have personal preferences. Be sure to post a picture of it.

Here's hoping you enjoy your new ride.

Most of you guys are doing great with this thread, others not so much.

You only get to pick one car, Yeah lookin at you Fjallhrafn :nono:, I don't care if you list a few cars you'd like to have but YOU HAVE TO PICK ONE and only ONE. Uno, Un, Eine, Een, En. Got it?

Also, Some of you guys say you already own your dream car so pick something else to go with it. Remember, you don't have to get rid of any of the cars you already own.

And it would be cool if those of you who just posted a car would go back and edit your post to tell us a little about the reason behind your pick.

I couldn't tell you why. It was love at first sight since the time I was a little kid. One way or another I will have one before I die, but I gotta get a garage I can use first.

Sure there are lots of other fancy cars out there, and I've driven some of those high end imported Porsches, but the ongoing cost of insurance and maintenance kills those for me according to the rules of this thread.

Also, can I request a super rich chick for this fantasy? Preferably a hot one? It feels weird letting some dude buy me a dream car...

While I want all three of these cars, the one I would chose first is the Z06. The GTR is so cool in the engineering and technology categories that it is just amazing what it can do. But the styling for me leaves something to be desired. It's just sorta meh to me where as the Corvette looks like a road going tiger shark (Probably why they have a color called Shark Gray Metallic) and that is what makes me want it over the GTR. Plus that supercharged 6.2L V8 sounds so much more badass than the V6 in the GTR.

That Challenger Hellcat though is the big loud shouty car. Just pure unadulterated red blooded Americaness. I can't help but want one in a loud shouty color like the one in the video in Sublime Green just so it screams about how American it is when it's sitting still in a parking lot.

Its definitely a toss-up between the Z06 and GTR. Both are awesome cars. The vid showed that the GTR was slightly faster on the track.

I'd be hard-pressed to choose between the 2. You could give me either one and I won't complain.

Yep, the GTR was faster by 1.6 seconds. They said the spoiler probably held it back but without it the car was too loose in the rear.

I think the Z06 would benefit from a wing just like what they've been using in since the C5R over the spoiler that comes on it. Notice the GTR has a wing as opposed to a spoiler.

No matter what they are both awesome cars.

Well the manual transmission as we know it will probably go the way of the dodo in the next 10 years, if not sooner.

The Porsche 911 GT3 is no longer offered with one. That's very telling. And from what I understand on the new M3/4 you can get a manual, it's just a matter of finding one in the U.S. or placing an order for one at a dealer.

Also the Challenger Hellcat is offered with the manual transmission from the Viper, however it was so weak they had to add an oil cooler to it so it could survive the 707+ HP so you're better of with the automatic.

Honestly these new automatic, or rather "manumatic", transmissions are getting pretty impressive. They're not quite the slushboxes of the past. The Z06 with the auto is actually faster than the manual on the track.

I have a 2012 Ford Raptor right now, and I can't figure out a better ride than that for me. Since I can't pick it, how about the new 2017 Raptor?

If I have to live a Raptor-less life, I would go with one of the TRD Pro products. Probably the Tundra since I have an RV, even though I actually prefer the 4Runner.

For me, it was a toss-up between awesome sports/muscle car, and off-road adventure monster. I absolutely love some of the choices in this thread, especially the Charger R/T. But I've wanted a Wrangler since high school and the stock ones don't quite do it for me, so I'll take THIS (http://www.rubitrux.com/2015-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-rubicon-anvil-651989.html), or something similar, then I'd sell my '05 XTerra and use the proceeds to buy a Mazda/Toyota commuter car for everyday use.

More like 15 years. But like I said, when the 911 GT3 only comes with Porsche's PDK with no manual option, that is very telling. That's not the final nail in the coffin for the stick & clutch manual transmissions but the undertaker has started building the coffin.

I once hurt my left leg while running and would not have been able to drive a car with a clutch.

Ok Im changing my answer.

Yesterday I met up with my best friend for lunch. He showed up in his brand new 2016 Corvette Z06 with the Z07 package. After riding in that thing for a while I can say the performance is just ridiculous. It corners like a roller coaster and accelerates like crazy. And to top it off the exhaust note is orgasmic. Im not saying we were speeding in the car but I do know that one equipped just like it goes from 55 to 100 mph in about 4.5 seconds.

Per the parameters of the thread I would get a base model Z06. I couldnt afford to replace the brakes that come with the Z07 package.

This is not that easy. For as long as I can remember I've loved the 69 Charger - only the metal roof with the pistol grip shifter. But I'd want modern seats like Recaros, modern power plant and transmission, etc - like some lucky dude did with a 68 several years ago by putting a Mopar V10 and 6 speed in it. He also put on modern axles for 5 lug modern wheels, etc. but that's not likely to be found that way and stay within the rules.

I still miss my 97 turbo Supra. Had it 10 years and took it to the track and autoX events. Installed coilovers and other goodies. I've always loved the black on black Ferrari 512TR and 512M. A red on black 575M would also fill an empty spot in my soul. The new Ford GT looks like something I could polish by hand for hours and run hard at the track. And as I get older and the joints and lower back start to resist me I find myself lusting over things like the Audi S8 (or RS8).

But if I had the option for anything... I'd have to choose a Saleen S7 (the turbocharged version) in Beryllium with black interior. I'm single with no kids other than dogs. I'm in my 4th decade and make decent money. Pretty sure I could swing the insurance.
