UKIAH, California – Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. soldier accused of leaving his post before being captured in Afghanistan, was detained during a raid in California this week.
Captain Gregory Vann Patton of the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said a narcotics team served a warrant at a property on the 18,000 block of Tomki Road in Redwood Valley around 8 a.m. Tuesday.
According to Vann Patton, Bergdahl was visiting with friends and acquaintances for a couple of days and was only detained and not arrested. Vann Patton said there was no evidence showing Bergdahl was involved the marijuana cultivation allegedly taking place on the property. Bergdahl, who Vann Patton said cooperated with authorities, was released later that day.
Officials in California made contact with the U.S. Army after Bergdahl told them who he was. Vann Patton said Bergdahl had approval from the U.S. Army to be on leave. He was due to report back to work shortly after he was detained, so authorities in California help facilitate his transportation back to that location.
Bergdahl was held captive by the Taliban for five years. He was released as part of a prisoner exchange last year and brought to Joint Base San Antonio - Fort Sam Houston.
Vann Patton said 181 marijuana plants were found growing on the property. At least one person was arrested on drug charges in connection with the raid. Since there were multiple people at the residence, there may be more arrests in the case.
