Are these legit? Anyone have them? Looking for a more robust alternative to boards, limbs, etc.

Anyone have an ideal "truck shovel"??

I've not seen them before but look like the best take so far on an old solution. I used to use the perforated steel (just like you would see on the sides of WW II vehicles in the desert) but while great in sand, something less in mud. Those have the teeth in them to help avoid slippage. I could not comment on the legitimacy of them other than they look great.

Ideal truck shovel>>> good question. I have used mostly the "D" handled short shovel. That is good until you really need to get under the truck... then the long handled shovel is needed; until of course, you find yourself in a situation where that handle gets in the way. Please don't ask.

I mount a full size shovel in the bumper with the hi-lift jack. I throw the smaller one in the back. With an axe.

I don't have the maxtrax; a buddy of mine does- we go wheeling all the time. I bought the TREDS 1100 instead as they are 1/2 the price of the maxtrax; built just as tough and have a lifetime warranty.

Both work great, I would say the maxtrax are just a bit better design/materials wise, but at twice the price of the TREDS 1100 series I don't think you are getting your moneys worth unless this is an everyday tool for you.

Both the maxtrax and TREDS have worked in snow, sand, boggy mud- everything we've thrown at them they can handle.

As far as a truck shovel, you have to decide what works best for you. Lots of options...

I always have an old wood handle Vietnam era folding shovel/E-Tool that can be a shovel or pick axe (This is a versatile tool I take everywhere with me) and when I do serious wheeling I also take a D-Handle shovel, not as short as the E-tool/folding shovel but still compact and is a bit more robust when needed.

There have been a few times when I wished I had a long handled shovel and needed one, but made due with the shorter D-Handle shovel.

I use the "quickfist" mount to hold the shovels and my axe. I have a few mounted inside the cab and a few outside on my roof rack. Look on amazon for "Quickfists"; should be easy to find. They work great and have stood up well to time/weathering.

I got my TREDS #1100 for $159.00 with free shipping. Can't remember where though.

The maxtrax are great, if you feel the extra cost isn't too much- get them, they rock!

I know there is typically a group buy twice a year going- on either Tacomaworld or t4r.org for both maxtrax and TREDS. There is also a guy on tacomaworld who sells both for less than you can find them from retailers. I forget his user name though, I think it is silver snake? I'll see if I can find him and ask his pricing/shipping.

Here's a link to the Quickfists I was referring to on amazon.

I bought a bunch and use them for a lot of stuff. They are great.

El Nino predicted for this year in CO, which means big snow on the front range. I heard of industrial sized ones being used for oil and gas exploration.

With all the idiots that have moved here (to CO) from out of state in the past few years a big snow season is going to be interesting- and an effing headache!!!

maxtrax are untouched the clones are close but its like saying X gun at half the price is as good as say a Noveske or something
like anything when you get into it you find often the copies are just that never quite as good as the real stuff :)
if they are hardly used might be OK to buy the less ones though not saying they are bad just saying they are not as good :)

head over here http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum do a search
or to www.ih8mud.com

for the central american expidition http://www.xoverland.com I think #3 or something they show them using them in the sand :)

also some testing was done a while back and what happens to the cheaper ones it the tread traction points can get ripped off easier or do not get quite the traction etc..... and don't hold up as well etc.....

I saw one Aussie review of the TREDS v. Maxtrax, and the TREDS cracked with three cruisers over them at full bore. He stated the Maxtrax specifically disliked any wheelspin because the lugs would "melt"/"shear" off, and with a long use of the TREDS, only one knob missing on two TREDS. His recommendation was the Maxtrax, but it was close enough that he really said, "Get either."

I think for my insignificant usage, I will probably try to score the TREDS at a good price, as I do not actually expect to get stuck where I am going, just want to have what I need - in case.

There are some crap clones it there, yes. And there are some comparable products that aren't quite as good as the mantras but aren't crap.

One of he issues I've heard about from maxtrax is the treading is too hard and just sharp enough to chew up tire tread; especially aggressive mudder and 4X tread.

I've had first hand experience with both the maxtrax my buddy owns and the TREDS I've owned and they are both top notch with maxtrax getting the edge and being the superior overall product.

If you are a hard day in day out user go with maxtrax just like I said. But I know of many including myself who have put the TREDS 1100 and maxtrax through the paces and both have been GTG.

I have seen the cheapo ones and they burn up from tire friction making them smooth flat panels that are worthless. Others that have the tread/spike break right off and others that just break in half- there are too many clones that are absolute crap for sure.

As long as you are not bridging, I think that you should get the MaxTrax or look at a similar product that is made of comparable materials and cheaper. What type of situations are you attempting to recover yourself? Mud or Sand?

Carova Beach, NC - pony chasing. I suspect I will be on the mainline, but just want to have them in case. And it's honestly a good thing to have in the truck anyway.

I would be concerned more about the metal ones getting damaged and sharp edges protruding which could easily shred a tire. That possibility exists with the polymer ones as well, but would be less of a worry IMO.

no worries as I wrote :) not saying they are bad just saying they are not as good :)
and if not used all the time the maxtrax might not be worth it ?

bridge ladders are not for recovery really :)

also for bridge some guys get these fiberglass like material used in construction grates and love them for bridging
maxtrax and the like can be used for gentle bridge and could be used to fill in or on top of other material and used

also if you go camping maxtrax or the others can be used to level out your rig if staying over night etc...

What rig are you running, SHIVAN?

I know that Honu frequents another site that I do as well, so he and I have seen many of the same products used in action.

No rig, just an F150 that I'd prefer not to be stuck in because some assclown decided to hog the route around the dunes, and I get over in some of the soft & deep stuff. I won't be doing anything crazy, but having been there in a Jeep, I can see where it might get sketchy because of the two-way traffic, and idiots involved.
