Hi I am new to the forum as of today and am currently building my AR and have my lower all done. Anderson Manufacturing stripped lower with CMMG lower parts kit and a BCM mil spec stock with H buffer. Only thing I have left to do is order my upper but I'm having a hard time choosing. I want this to be as close to a M4 as possible and I'm looking at a BCM upper 14.5 inch pinned and then I'm also looking at a Colt 6920 socom upper with 16 inch barrel. The Colt is actually cheaper than the BCM and thats without the hand guard on the BCM. Im aware that the colt no longer uses KAC and uses troy instead witch i kinda don't like but could get me by for now until i get a KAC for it and then sell the troy. Also plan on a KAC VG and a aimpont later down the road. Anyway I plan on ordering friday so help me make the desicison guys.

Get a 16" BCM upper with BCG/CH combo deal, and be done with it.

Its a hard decision. If you never plan on going suppressed or changing your flash hider the bcm would be fine. If you get the kac ras kit it should have the vfg and the panels that were issued with the sopmod block 1 or when the reg army got the rails. The aimpoint pro would be a good substitute for the m68 cco of the original sopmod 1. It was a comp m2 with the aimpoint qrp mount.
If you will want a suppressor in the future or want to change flash hider then go with the Colt.

I have a 16" BCM HF mid length upper...run about 1000ish through it...

Its yet to have a failure; Have run a wide variety of ammo through it (PMC Bronze, AE 223, IMI 556, AE 855, Black Hills 77r 223) and its all worked well; Its also been quite accurate (5"x5" target zone, paper and steel) out to 200 yards...

Conditions were always at a range, so its not seen any sort of hard use, besides running drills with it...

How correct are you wanting to make this M4gery? Are you wanting to do a correct clone or just something like an M4? As far as an upper assembly goes, BCM has a nice one, but I am not crazy about the BSN logo on them. What I would recommend is to buy a standard complete forged upper receiver (with M4 feed ramps), a Colt 14.5" M4 profile barrel assembly, a Delta ring assembly, M16 type BCG, charging handle, and have a BCM extended A2 FH pinned and welded to the barrel. I built an M4 clone a few years ago and this is what I did.

I also have one set up similar to what you are talking about doing. This one has a CMMG 14.5" upper assembly with a pinned and welded BCM extended A2 FH.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I've decided to go with the 14.5 BCM upper with the pinned A2X and then order the KAC. I don't plan on ever changing the flash hider or putting a suppressor on it. Seeing all these pics sure gets me excited to get my build done. I'm sure this won't be my last build. It's not even done yet and I'm already addicted lol

You may want to check on some of the classified sections of these forums. You may just find a good deal on a slightly used upper assembly. Here is one I just found on another forum.

If you haven't "pulled the trigger" on ordering yet, I'm going to cast a vote. I don't think you can go wrong with either company, but if this is your first AR (kinda sounds like it,) re-consider the 16" from either company. Trust me, you say you'll never change it, but you probably will. Having that pinned/welded muzzle device will probably make a headache for you at some point. Ballistic, weight and handling differences between the two setups are negligible. You'll probably be better served with the 16" barrel.

Didn't pull the trigger yet but plan on it today. This is my first AR and after thinking about it for a but I am gonna go with the 16" on this one. Just in case. Pulling the trigger on the colt SOCOM upper later today after work. Will pick up a KAC RAS and throw that on there and I think I'm gonna be very happy with it. Thanks for all the help and advise guys. Ill post pics once I get it all put together.

Go with the blemished KAC RAS directly from KAC. I've got two, and I can't even tell what the blemish is on them.
