View Full Version : S&B 55gr FMJ .223
Does anyone have any use with S&B 55gr .223 rifle ammunition?
Good or bad. I have located a couple of cases and have the option to buy them but can not try before I buy. Thought I would ask here and see what you folks think of it.
Thanks for your time.

I shot alot of it out of my Bushmaster a few years back. Never had a problem with the stuff I shot. I think it made good shooting practice ammo.
a buddy and I are were at a tactical training facility a few weeks ago and they had cases and cases of that stuff
we shot about 1500 rds, zero problems
one of his guns (16" RRA HBAR SS) shot an inch at 100 with it.
not bad
mine grouped like 2 with it (sabre 16 SS)
this was 223 not 5.56 ammo
I have shot lots of S&B in pistols over the years never an issue whatsoever
If it's cheap, buy it.
It makes for mediocre once fire brass because the brass is somewhat "stretchy".
Cheap would be the deciding factor... as in cheaper than I could get some Priv.
I have shot up two different cases from two different lot numbers and both were consistant in their performance. Zero problems, accurate enough, and a fine training ammunition.
Thanks for the replies gentleman.
The price I'm looking at is $330 per 1K. No tax, no shipping, out the door. I've found a couple of places on line but after paying shipping, I can't find 1K of any brand ammo for less than $375 shipped or taxed (less Wolf but I won't use Wolf).
I figure with the way .223 prices are going, six months from now that $330 is going to look better and better. That's why I thought of purchasing a couple of thousand now...
That's cheaper than the Priv is going for. I'd go for it.
In your guys opinion do you think that S&B is cleaner or lets say a better product than Privi? Or vise versa?
Thanks.
Evan,
Yes. S&B has been around since the early 1800's and I used to shoot it all the time in Germany as it was one of the cheapest brands available. I bought some of the SS109 equivalent and it shot fine in my Noveske upper.
I use it all the time & have observed A LOT of rds. go downrange during a class- without any ammo problems.
It's good to hear that S&B is shaking its reputation for KaBoom rifle ammo.

I've shot over 5,000-rounds of the stuff over the past year-and-a-half without any issues. In fact, if I could find a source that was charging the same price as what I am paying for PRVI ammo, I'd buy more. YMMV.
I've used it in tactical courses and on the range and have had no issues at all with it.
Natchez has it for 349.50 a case right now.
