I am looking to do a build of a carbine in the next few months. I want to build in order to get better components while still not breaking my bank. My upper will either be a LMT or a BCM from Grant with their respective M16 bolt groups. My question is how good are the Spike Tactical Lowers since my local dealer has them in stock. Will they accept PMAGS and will they be reliable? I will probably use a CMT trigger group with them and a standard M4 mil-spec stock. Any comments on what components I should buy instead would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a Full Auto marked Spikes lower a year ago and SBR'd it, mated it to a 10'5" Noveske VIS upper and SureFire can from Grant at G&R. I love it, exclusively use P-Mags (no problems at all). I believe they are made by the same folks that make a handful of other high quality forged lowers: I researched them at the time and if my memory either LAR or CMT made the batch I recv'd...there are threads on this subject on ARFCOM. There are many threads on this subject, but if I can paraphrase:
"99% of all forged lowers are the same quality function+/- finish...Hesse and Oly are the exceptions - they are sub-par"

Spikes was my second choice at the time as I wanted HK style FA markings (as I intend to buy a FA sear)...Ideally I wanted another Gen 3 POF billet. I have another POF Gen 3 lower on a POF 18" DMR and it is the finest lower IMHO anywhere - but both the wait (was quoted 3+ months then) and price ($300) SUCK!)

So I paid $125 and had it in 2 days from LANWORLD Inc. out of Utah (great service and prices on Spikes, Magpul, POF etc.) and had it engraved (for the SBR) at Orion

If I had it to do again, I'd forget the FA markings and buy a billet lower - specifically, buy a Sun Devil lower from Grant @ G&R or Rainier Arms as a back up if Grant's out of stock (both had them in stock last I checked) You'll pay ~$150 stripped, but it is HQ billet for forged price.

While you are at it, have Grant build it using his LMT LPK, upgraded trigger (JP, Giselle or Tinmey), and one of the new UBR stocks! It's only money...

IIRC Spike's lowers come from LAR.

I have two stripped Spike's lowers, although I haven't built anything with them and am not sure if I will.

Is there a specific reason you did not build them? I do not want spend money and time for something I will not be happy with.

Not really. I just like to accumulate lowers from various makers.

Of the lowers in my safe, Spike's would not be at the top of my list to build from simply because I don't much care for the spider logo on the magwell.
