Setting up an AR/reloading workbench and it's gotta go inside the house, so that limits the size I can use. Can anyone recommend a decent workbench that's smallish (roughly 36-48" wide, 20-24" deep - somewhere around that size) that has a good worktop? Open to suggestions!

Craigslist.

Find an old drafting table, steelcase desk, or workbench and refinish the top with wood or MDF.

I've gotten so much cool shit for restoration projects off craigslist it ain't funny. I just redid an old HON office desk into a radio workstation. Spent more on paint than I did on the desk.

Got a Sam's Club nearby?

Explanation: my wife and I bought a small house for the two of us, single story brick, single brick detached garage, mostly unfinished basement. It was both of our second marriages, she had no kids, I had one at home, house was good. Then life happened and we did foster care and ultimately adopted two kids. House too small for activities. So I built a huge two story barn garage, with the second floor devoted to my man cave. My wife sews and quilts plus took up stamping as a hobby. In order to assure peace and harmony I gave her 1/3 of my man cave. I didn't want things to look cluttered and had already planned to make a dry bar so when I saw these things at Sam's I jumped on board.

The bench is primo. You have to assemble the items and tey are not Snap-On quality, but they are good. The bigger rolling bench spent one season strapped to the inside of our go-kart trailer making weekly pilgrimages to 3 different race tracks across the state and it did not break down. Ultimately I redid the inside of the trailer and moved it upstairs for the wife.

The smaller rolling cabinet neatly rolls under either side of the work bench.

She also has four of the hanging cabinets. Back third of the man cave looks pretty nice and not too chickified.

She has filled everything up with stamping shit, I figure we are out about $20.00 per card she makes at this point in time.

I wouldn't recommend these for commercial shop use, but for the average guy, these are good to go.

Hope this helps!

Big fan of getting some lumber and making your own. (Lumber could be free Craigslist stuff) Got one of these, and if you're really worried about space, they can do a lot of things, yet store compactly. http://www.blackanddecker.com/products/power-tools/project-solutions/workbenches/workmate-portable-project-center-and-vise/wm425 You can make several tops for one unit (with a 2x4 cleat along the bottom to clamp to) and switch between tasks.
