Just took a brand new Marlin 336W in on a trade for a used police trade in Glock 17.

Wanting to use this gun as a truck gun, so I'm thinking its gonna just get left with the Iron's on it. I can't remember the member here who specializes in the Marlin's, but I'm hoping he will post in this thread.

What would it cost to have the gun gone over and the action smoothed up. Basically I just want this to stay in a case in my Jeep. I can take this rifle to any state and thats what I wanted it for.

Great brush/truck gun! Do you know what year? Some of the Remington-made Marlins reportedly have accuracy issues, so I'd recommend bench shooting it to check before you invest much time.

You can do an action job yourself with some fine grit sandpaper if you're comfortable working on guns... Marlinowners.com has some great advice. Here's what I did to mine:

1.) Wild West Happy Trigger kit (about $100 drop in- improves trigger break and gets rid of the "Marlin trigger flop")
2.) Smooth action job - look on the above website for information about the dreaded "double feed jam". The smooth job will correct this issue. This isn't "gunsmithing" per se, it's more like polishing, and it makes a big difference.
3.) Williams firesight kit. Peep rear and fiber optic front. 10x better than the stock buckhorn sight.
4.) Buttstock ammo holder. I can't remember which one, but it's nylon and holds 7 extra rounds on the buttstock.
5.) A good sling. I use a leftover Magpul MS3 for mine, which makes it easier to shoulder and cinch down if I'm climbing up a slope or something.

I am by no means an expert on Marlins (not the guy you were looking for in the OP), but all these mods greatly improved my Marlin's action and reliability. I've had zero malfunctions since I did the smoothing (it did double feed when new), and have put about 300 rounds through the gun with no problems. Well one problem- 30/30 is harder to find than it should be out here in CA.

Given what you're after, DIY might be the best route if you're up for it.

Otherwise I can HIGHLY recommend Joe Barnsfather @ Superior Firearms (http://www.superiorfirearmsllc.com/) (Mr Smith on M4C). He is a lever gun magician and his work is impeccable.

Good to know there is a fix for "letting two" as Markin described it to me. I sent it back and they fixed it on my 1894PG in .44 Mag. Uncle Mikes makes ammo scabbards for stocks. I used the Wild West Trigger too. I had a Ashley peep on my gun. I think AO is now XS Signts. Williams makes a good sight too and I think it is less money b

Its brand new, gun was a raffle item that I had ordered for a local benefit, the customer who won it came in to pick it up and asked about trading for something more useful for himself. He saw a police trade in gen 3 g17and wanted to know if he could have that instead. Out the door he went with the glock and the marlin became mine, always wanted one so this was the perfect opportunity.

Mr. Smith is exactly who I was thinking of who did the lever gun work, but thats for the DYI stuff!

Another shop that does amazing work on Marlin lever guns is Ranger Point Precision n Cypress, TX.

I have been in their shop and handled several of their lever guns that have had action jobs and short stroke kits installed. Amazing what they do - the actions are slick as can be.

My 1894 Marlin 357 is in there now, having an action job....cannot wait to get it back!

They also do caliber conversions on Marlin lever guns. They showed me a conversion done to the 44 mag Marlin 1894 to 45ACP. Very cool and the converted Marlin holds 12-14 rounds of 45ACP - quite a handy truck gun or home defense gun if you ask me. Very tempting to convert my own 44 mag 1894 to 45ACP.

Any update on your rifle? I just picked up a 336 youth that I plan on making a truck/brush gun. I'd really like to see what you do with yours.

I too am thinking of buy a Marlin 336Y--youth-- despite my 35 inch sleeve arms. A slip on recoil pad can fix any overall length problem, which by the way would disappear when wearing a heavy jacket. My experience with Marlins is that their simplicity allows the unskilled to do a few things without harm. Unscrewiing one screw allows the lever to drop out, the bolt to be removed, and then the ejector--all easily. Flitz polish fixes any roughness. The trigger will smooth out with use. I plan to spend about $100 on the neat and rugged Skinner peer sight.

You will have to decide what to do with the lawyer push-the-bolt-through-the-receiver safety. Plugs are available from the lever smith in Lampasas, Tx. You can lessen or eliminate trigger creep by pushing against a cocked hammer and then pulling the trigger. Do this several times with force. Before anybody gasps and chokes on his or her snuff, let me quickly add that this technique was and maybe still is taught to fitters at the Smith and Wesson plant. So was adjusting p.o.a on fixed sight revolvers using a big hammer.

If you spend too much money on your rifle, it ain't a truck gun anymore but is on its way to queendom. Keep us informed.

I'm going to put the XS sight/rail combo that comes on the 1895 guide gun on mine, and possibly a reflex sight or long eye relief scout scope foward on that long rail. I popped the hood off the front sight already, didn't like it. I'm also looking into the champion synthetic stock set for it as well. The skinner sight set looks like a good piece of equipment as well, I just like the longer rail the XS sight offers. None of this will happen till after hunting season though, I hope to get a deer with it as is.
