View Full Version : 77gr nosler rl15 14.5" barrel
I have a 6920 I've been loading for, have been using the above mentioned bullets with 23grs of re15. I shot ten rd groups with them at 100yds, along with some charges above it and below it. It was shooting around moa with the aforementioned load. Not having access to a chronograph, I am wondering, if I'm loading these for a sd round how can I test to see if they will perform or if I need to up the charge? I have all the room in the world to shoot so testing isn't a problem. I just am not sure how to or what to do. I'm guessing someone else is loading this round in a 14.5" barrel. Id like to know your take on it. I'm going to be switching to arcomp, but have 3 jugs of the re15 to use first. Thanks for any advice.
H322 21.7grs, 8208 23.4grs, 24.4 tac. Start lower and work up. I don't use rl15 anymore it doesn't meter well on Dillon and to temp unstable. It's still good powder just not for me anymore.
There is no way to test without a chronograph and no two rifles will perform the same.
Start at the bottom of the powder manufacturers load recommendation and work your way up to the max. DO NOT go over recommended max unless you know what you are doing.

I guess when I asked how to test the round I was meaning more for performance on impact.
A full power load out of 14.5 should Easily make good SD ammo out of 14.5. I have no problem getting great frag out of a 10.5 with the above mentioned load of 23.4 gr 8028 XBR.
Markm, thanks for that answer. If I were wanting to test how much it will frag, what would you suggest shooting into?
Another question, when I go to do this testing, what level of accuracy should I strive to keep ie 1moa, 2moa @ 100 yds? Granted I'll do 10 rd groups probably to test for accuracy.
I just shoot the biggest, strongest water jugs I can get. It's far from scientific, but I get some sort of results. I shot 77s down to sub/trans sonic. At those velocities, they don't frag. They just turn sideways and punch through the water jugs. I can see the sideways bullet shaped holes in the backs of the jugs.
Do you line multiples up or just shoot one?
Another question, what distance should I test for fragmentation and penetration at, 10yds,100yds, 300yds?
I shot these bigger 2ish gallon jugs that Pappabear had saved. I think two of them stacked up.
