Recently we took a members 6.8 SPC build on a Pronghorn Antelope hunt here in Montana. It worked out quite well and had me wishing I had built a 6.8 for hunting deer and lighter game. Here is a quick write up of the hunt:

Thanks for the read. Was the shooter using the 110gr Hornady Vmax mentioned at the beginning of the article for the hunt, too? Where was the shot placement on the buck? Thanks again.

Yes that was the ammunition used. At that distance he chose to whack him in the neck and preserve the little meat that is on an Antelopes front quarters. He blew the spine out and the buck literally dropped in his bed.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, it's good to see the 6.8 used for something different. Something most think a long range rifle is needed to hunt them.

great read. I've got my AR Performance 6.8 dialed in with 110 grn pro hunters with my suppressor, but no joy on a buck.....yet

Thanks for details. I have an AR Performance 6.8 from the days when constructor offered full-house custom uppers. I wish I could come into another. Hornady 120 SST is seriously awesome.

And ammo is getting cheaper- Federal XM68 uses a good 90gr bonded bullet at $13 a box

Federal, Hornady, Remington, S&B and Nosler all load 6.8 now and there is a rumor Winchester is considering it.

More affordable ammo is great news. I love my 6.8; it kind of does it all. I'm a committed user of the AR platform. 5.56 is barely legal to hunt deer with in my AO and is ethically questionable on medium sized game - little room for error in shot placement. .300 BLK has significant range and bullet limitations. 6.8x43 is literally just what the Doctor ordered as a sub-minute 6.8 AR is much more affordable (not to mention more flexible) than a comparably accurate bolt gun for medium sized game animals. I'm planning another 6.8 upper at this point - just purchased a barrel/bolt combo from AR15performance for that project.

Great read.
I've been thinking about putting together a rifle for deer/pronghorn and was seriously considering the 6.8spc. Your article helps to motivate me to do it.
Thanks

Here is the same rifle with a new paint job, doing some winter shooting out at 500 yards.
