Can anyone recommend a quality barrel in the $250 range, 16" carbine with fixed sight (non f marked). Thanks!

I looked, as I'm sure you have as well, and found basically nothing in that price range. It looks like $250 will get you a nice barrel, but no other hardware for it.

I have this barrel sans the front sight. It's consistently sub-2 MOA with a stock trigger and a red dot sight.
Edit: it has an F-marked front sight base.
I would guess any 16" barrel you find will have an F-marked FSB

Has anyone grinder down the front sight post to make it "non f" height? Or is that a bad idea?

Bad idea. Just use a shorter post

Can you explain why you wouldn't want an F-marked front sight base? What purpose would it serve?

I second using the shorter post. You likely won't even notice the difference once sighted in.

I'm building an a2 upper with fixed carry handle. The f marked is for flat top uppers.

And it will work and zero just fine. I would be more concerned about the lack of feed ramps in your upper.

As far as I've read... That is only an issue if you are in "full auto" which I won't be.. we will have to see though.

With a carbine length gas system it will be an issue. Bolt carrier velocity is higher, and the faster reciprocation speeds make it more likely to nosedive a round coming out of the magazine into where an M4 would have extended feed ramps.
