So being Halloween I had to watch several of the classics, and as with all great films, as you get older you see something new that you previously missed, or at least didn't fully appreciate at the time.

So tonight I was watching "An American Werewolf in London" (1981). Saw this when it first came out with my father and it scared the crap out of me, despite being something of a comedy / horror film. The special effects were pretty ground breaking and the deterioration of Jack Goodman really did a number on me. Thank goodness for Jenny Agutter who provided some much needed distraction.

Now of course right off, I recognized the Ingram M-10s from David's nightmares.

http://www.imfdb.org/images/e/e4/AWIL-MACattackA.jpg

Further research reveals they are actually M-11s but I was too freaked out by the nightmare that you think you woke up from that is still a nightmare to pay close attention to details. I had experienced that several times and this is the first time any film depicted it.

Also completely missed the FAL rifles, actually L1A1s at the end. But watching it tonight I knew exactly what they'd be just from the magazine.

http://www.imfdb.org/images/2/22/AAWIL-L1A1MagazineA.jpg

http://www.imfdb.org/images/thumb/a/a0/AAWIL-L1A1_01a.jpg/500px-AAWIL-L1A1_01a.jpg

According to IMFD they are fitted with ART II scopes on what I presume are STANAG cover mounts. A rather hard to find FAL item these days.

Only one firearm of note in "Halloween" (1978), and that is a Smith & Wesson Model 15 Combat Masterpiece carried by Dr. Loomis.

What stood out most was a 20 year old Jamie Lee Curtis, a 25 year old P. J. Soles and a 29 year old Nancy Loomis trying to portray high school girls...like "totally."

Also pretty cool the kids in the film were watching "The Thing" (1951) from Winchester Pictures Corporation. One has to wonder if this was a deliberate foreshadowing of Carpenter's intent to remake the film in the next few years.

UM...

What about The Thing 80s version? When dude was chasing down the dog with the HK93 and hensoldt?

I remember watching a LATE showing of the remake of The Thing. I actually slept through most of it but a few parts because I liked the girl. Well when dude pops out with the HK33 I freaking cheered. Literally. I got weird looks. Even though it wasn't the same gun, just seeing a scoped HK33 again cheered me up.

If we wanna get obscure, there was this really bad Leviathan/Abyss/Deepstar Six movie called The Rift that had the Pancor Jackhammer.

I still want a Savage 99 because of Dawn of the Dead.

I agree. And one of the first films with a HK93 followed shortly by "First Blood" (1982). I just didn't happen to watch The Thing tonight so I didn't really comment on it, great film by the way and one of the few remakes that is actually superior to the original and faithful to the story.

I geek out over stuff like that. This is one of the reasons why I like Tarantino films, he pulls this kind of stuff all the time to pay tribute to his favorite directors/actors/films.

Have you seen The Thing (2011), technically the third film but no re-make. The film makers met with and got Carpenter's blessing, it's essentially a prequel to his film telling the story of the Norwegians and if you watch them back to back they are seamless down to the smallest detail.

That's the late movie I saw. It's. ...a'ight. I really just liked the girl who was in it who was in Scott Pilgrim which reminded me of a live action anime based on Archie and the gang.

Stay for the credits.

Knowing 2/3 would be rare but knowing 3/3 of these movies...I say bravo. Some of my favorite. The abyss should have been originally released with the directors cut, it really helps fill in holes that you miss in theatrical version.

The Abyss creeped me out.

But Deepstar Six, a movie I literally haven't seen since the 80s/early 90s was a gorefest as I recall. This one dude didn't decompress and he blew up. And the monster looked like something from Hell. And the one lady had these white robot eyes and black hair.

YES! I thought she was hot. I dare not Google her to see what the ravages of time have done to her. Aahh...I remember enjoying Arsenioooooo Haaaaaaallll until he got political. I always liked it when random people were "in the house" and that one time Jason Voorhees was considered to be an actual guest.

They got around...they were in the Army and the foreign legion and I dunno how to post it they are out there grinning holding what looks like Krag rifles...maybe 03A3s, but I think they are Krags

Look like '03s, I don't see a trap door.

titsonritz
11-01-15, 23:15
That is an '03 for sure. In addition to the lack of side trap door it has an upper wooden handguard, the Krag's does not have an upper handguard so barrel is exposed, also the Krag's stock tapers quite a bit more toward the muzzle. Another exterior difference is the '03 has collar at the end of the stock that includes a sling swivel and bayonet lug. The Krag's forward sling swivel in on a barrel band and the bayonet lug is on the barrel under the front sight.

As for my favorite gun porn in what I consider classic movies . . .

Ian Yule, a real life SAS Soldier and later a mercenary turned actor used an experimental British SLR short barreled FAL in The Wild Geese.

The AKS-74s used by the Soviet para-troopers in the original Red Dawn, their mostly in the opening attack. After that just a bunch of AKMs built on Maadi host rifles.

The HK-91 in Tremors and Commando. Those scenes of Burt Gummers "rec room" and Commando's gun room are just bad ass, same with the Surplus City scene in Commando. If only Army-Navy store really had a back room like that! Funny so many people thought/think you can really by automatic weapons, rocket launchers, and HEs from a surplus store lol.

Also the gun store scene in Terminator, the longslide .45 with the Laser Products (aka Surefire lazer), the SPAS-12, the Uzi.

John Wayne's suppressed Mac-10 in McQ.

IMHO the worst Bond film, but Octopussy had Steyr AUGs. This was the first appearance of them in a film.

Those were actually mock ups.

If you look at the magazine, it's a bakelite 7.62 magazine.

Several AKS-74 mockups are used by Soviet paratroopers in the first attack on the school and Soviet Spetsnaz during the battle in the snow. They are actually Maadi ARMs that were very cleverly fitted with bakelite plastic magazines, skeleton stocks, and custom-made muzzle brakes that resemble that of the AK-74.

Figures as there were no '74s outside of the Soviet universe at that time. But still, because of that movie I will always have a soft spot for AKS-74s.

For such a low budget, they did their homework.
One of the paratroopers has a CZ pistol(or maybe a modded Hi Power) and the Spetsnaz Colonel had a Jati Matic to stand in for a Polish subgun.

Plus they directly reference 4473.

Yeah John Milius is a genius, even Spielberg has said he is one of the best story tellers in the business. That says something coming from him.

Big Jake
I'm a real fan of the Duke and try not to miss this one when it comes on.
http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Big_Jake
With no one left to help, Martha calls in her estranged husband "Big Jake" McCandles (John Wayne) for assistance, along with his sons Michael (Christopher Mitchum), James (Patrick Wayne), his old friend Sam (Bruce Cabot) and his dog (named Dog), to ride after the gang. In many respects, the movie reflects the social and political climate of the time (early seventies) when it was made.
1 Handguns
1.1 Colt Single Action Army
1.2 Model 1866 Remington Derringer
1.3 Movie prop: "Bergmann 1911"
2 Rifles & Carbines
2.1 Winchester 1892
2.2 M1903 Springfield
2.3 Sniper rifles
3 Shotgun
3.1 Double Barrel "Coach" Shotgun
I enjoyed the fact that many great guns were represented at the turn of the century and as the West was slowly changing.

Thanks for the info - loved the movie since I was a kid in the 60's when it was released, but did not know these martial legends of the era were involved with the production! If I remember correctly, isn't there an issue in the scene when the Duke breaks Kowalski's M16 against the tree? It's an obvious break-away prop - maybe even a Mattel toy?

PS Spent some time over the years on Pagoda Hill at Ft Benning where the A Camp was built for the movie and jumped on the DZ there when in Pathfinder School.

Yes, Wayne broke a Mattel M-16 Maurauder as a prop. The huge magazine is a dead giveaway.

Interesting little note:
"The Browning M2HB is seen mounted on Sherman tanks. Audie Murphy uses one to defeat an enemy infantry attack, earning him the Medal of Honor. In the actual battle Audie Murphy fired the Browning M2 from an M10 Tank Destroyer. Also, while the film depicts this action as having taken place in balmy weather and good visibility in rolling terrain, it actually took place in the bitter winter of 1945, at the edge of a forest and in conditions of poor visibility."
