Pennsylvanians have elected three Democrats to the state Supreme Court in one of the most expensive judicial elections in U.S. history.

Tuesday's election could alter the direction of Pennsylvania's highest appellate court for many years to come, as the justices elected Tuesday won't face reelection for another ten years.

With more than 70 percent of precincts reporting, AP called the race late Tuesday evening. The election of Philadelphia Judge Kevin Dougherty and Superior Court judges David Wecht and Christine Donohue, both of Allegheny County, would give Democrats a 5-2 majority on the state's highest appellate court.

Is it me or is electing judicial positions a stupid idea?

IF, they had term limits and We the People actually voted them in and or out of office. There is nothing more detrimental to our Republic than the appointment of activist judges (aka radical leftists) for life.

I prefer it personally... I don't know about 10 years though.

It cuts both ways regardless. You want that activist liberal judge that is appointed and may have no quals whatsoever for life? Ala Kagan and Sotomayor and etc?
Or at least the chance to have a say before they get in and a chance to get them out.

Our state constitution is clear. The right to keep and bear arms shall not be questioned. We have a preemption law that prohibits any governing body other than the state legislature, from making firearm laws and another that allows them to be taken to court I'd in violation of preemption AND be forced to pay court costs. Quite frankly we have the strongest state laws when it comes to protection of the 2A. Licenseless constitutional carry, NFA friendly, shall issue concealed. That's really the only place we're lacking, that and hunting with semiautos.

It's a weird system, but frankly, a pretty decent one. Open carry is legal without a permit everywhere except Philly. To carry concealed you need a permit, but the permits are shall issue in every county including Philadelphia, and normally are only about $20 and good for five years. Also, you can carry concealed AND open in Philly as long as you have a permit. However, you can't have your gun on your or accessible to you in a car without your permit. The car is considered "concealment".

How does Philly get away with that without violating preemption? I know every other governing body has backed down and withdrew or stopped enforcing their crap. I haven't really paid much attention since the preemption law now has teeth.

Ah... sounds similar to MO but here your vehicle is covered under castle doctrine.

Hopefully we will have constitutional carry here soon since the state constitution was amended recently to remove wording that could have possibly been used as a barrier to its passage.

It's actually because of this that we actually have statewide preemption at all. When the permit system was first passed (back in the 70s I believe), Philadelphia, to the surprise of absolutely no one, wanted to ban carry altogether, but the state wanted full preemption. Neither side wanted to continue with pure constitutional carry and desperately wanted to get something passed. So this was the compromise: Statewide concealed carry on a permit, constitutional open carry in every jurisdiction except cities of the first class, (Philly being the only one in the state) where open carry requires a permit.

Even with voting the left still took the court.

I'd be ok with voting if there was no R or D next to the candidates name and citizens knew the issues. Im tired of judges being political. They are there to enforce the constitution. End of story.

I think part of the Corbett, Penn State debacle along with the Justices porn emails, probably hurt us with the Supremes
the problem is now with redistricting it will be damn near impossible to get another Repub Gov
