Could somebody recommend a torque wrench i could buy and where i can find it. Preferably something that won't break the bank too bad. Thanks in advance.

If you're looking for ft/lbs, harbor freight... Go to hfqdb.com and you can probably find a coupon. If you're looking for in/lbs, get the Wheeler FAT wrench.

I consider a torque wrench a "precision" tool; therefore, not synonymous with cheap.

Buy one from a manufacturer that's reputable for making QUALITY tools.

The HF wrench is on sale right now, so will get 20% off that too. I don't know if the 3/8drive 5-80 lb would be better or not. It would put the barrel nut in mid range of the scale. Whereas teh 1/2drive is 20-150 and you will be using 30, 40 or so at bottom of range. Of course for $40 you could get both. Just print two coupons and have someone go with you or go back two days in a row.

Great replies from both of you guys. I'm definitely looking for inch/pounds. The main purpose is for swapping out for a new handguard. Would you say it's fair to expect to pay around $100 for a quality torque wrench?

Barrel nuts are torque to ft/lbs not in/lbs.

You would need in/lbs for scope mounts, rings, etc.

Assembling an AR is not something where you need very precise torque values. This isn't engine assembly. Even then, fastener stretch isn't that closely related to applied toque. This is why good head bolts say to torque to a certain value, then turn them a certain angle to get the desired stretch. It's much more accurate.

So go HF, or pony up for a CDI. They are really good stuff and affordable - there's no reason to mess around in the middle with Craftsman or whatever - I have yet to see a sub-$100 wrench that is any better than a HF.
