View Full Version : Barnes 55gr TSX recovered from deer
I shot a nice size 7 point today. When field dressing it, I recovered the bullet.
Rifle was a factory DD M4A1 14.5 inch barrel, shooting factory loaded Barnes ammunition, and the deer was shot at 20 yards through the shoulder and into the heart.

The bullet stopped in the center of the heart, and the residual energy ripped the lungs nearly in half.
Overall I was happy with the performance, but the 70gr TSX passes through for me usually, so I think I'll stick with those and reload my own.
Just thought I would share for those who were curious on the performance of the round.
Also, I was unable to clean all the meat off the bullet, so that's where the extra weight comes from on the scale.

A coworker of mine has had similar results with 55gr Federal HP's. He said the vital organ wounds were devastating with no through and through penatration. Thanks for the info on the TSX. That's another round for me to consider.

I highly recommend it.
Howdy,
Interesting.
I prefer to:
1.) Shoot them behind the shoulder instead of through the shoulder.
2.) For the bullet to exit on a broadside shot.

With the 70gr, that's what I do. However, a good friend of mine has used this round exclusively for a while now and recommended going through the shoulder.

that's impressive performance though for the 55gr. glad to see it expanded perfectly and did it's job. love to see a recovered 70 gr. bullet.
Very good post and information "BUT"
You need to stop biting your nails when your hunting deer. :haha:

I second that. what were you expecting
When I hunt deer its never a nailbiter as long as you keep the corn piles less than 5 feet apart.

^^ Holy cow. OP - where in Michigan? I usually hunt in Petoskey with the 70gr. Last one I hit in the neck just before the tender loin, broke its back. It trailed down the spine and burried in the guts so I wasn't able to recover it.
Op, thnks for posting, very cool.

Thru the shoulder and into the heart? Tree stand.
Your Barnes TSX 55grain showed excellent bullet performance. I would send a link to Barnes could get you a couple box's of bullets
