you might be able to find an MK1 around if you look , and those interest you. Otherwise im in the same position with trying to find my second favorite G rail between the 4 and 8

Goes without saying that it's all preference, but I personally would rather the MK8.

Now, how you run your sling and light is obviously what matters... but I would look at running the light either at 12:00, ahead of the front sight, or in an Arisaka inline mount at 45 degrees, if it would fit. Or even running an offset from 12:00, if you want to keep it on a fixed rail. That, and the fact that I run my sling at the rear of the handguard, would make the fixed rail sections up front useless.

Again, just me, but some things that you might consider.

Personally, I'd go with the slick sided Mk8, as I really don't like having the cheese graters where I'm not using them. Also with the introduction of Kinetic Development Group's Kinect QD M-lok accessories the m-lok, and Mk8 rail really shine. Swapping accessories from rail to rail, or quick-on/quick-off is ultra fast and painless.

If the Mk4 has fixed sections of rail for lights, lasers, etc, then whats the point of having MLOK at all? I asked the same thing when they had the keymod version. It seems somewhat pointless to me.

My vote goes for the MK-4. Honestly, it's not even an ounce of metal and what do they hurt when unoccupied? Making up for the lost attachments with quality aftermarket sections can light up the wallet.

Sling and grip mounting locations, and weight savings.

I prefer the MK8 on the shorter 7" and 9.5" rails, but on the longer 13" and 15" rails I prefer the MK4 .

M-Lok is obviously the lighter of the two. Think of the M-Lok slots as lightening slots you can hang stuff on. The next rail on my list is an SLR Solo because who needs continuous rail on the top as well. Still, ya gotta have some metal.

MK8 looks better but I think the MK4 gives you more versatility in that you can use good QD mounts to swap the stuff out on the end.

I use a light and a bipod on the end of the rail. Pop it off and use it with nothing for matches and daytime use, pop it on for night time or laying around dinging steel.

Mk8 with M-lok QD, via either std. M-lok attachment, or Kinect QD is pretty versatile, but again it boils down to a personal preference, and the accessories/mounting system you want to be able to use with the rail. Nothing that hasn't already been state, but bears repeating. The weight difference between the two choices is inconsequential, however the attachment methods and ergonomics are.

Pro Mk4 Reasons:

1. I like using a Gear Sector Scout Picatinny Offset Light Mount @ 9 O'clock, over the Magpul M-LOK Scout Light Mount
2. I like using an Atlas Bipod right on the Picatinny section @ 6 O'clock (13" rail w/ 16" bbl)
3. You'll always have a fallback to Picatinny, only on the ends of course, in a pinch, when M-LOK may not be convenient/available/prudent

If you're going straight M-LOK stuff only, and/or like the cleaner streamlined look, go Mk8.

I don't really like QD Sling Swivel mounts that aren't non-rotational, so them being built into the Mk4... meh, I guess they're there for a backup, but they are not my main QD Swivel Socket choice. I'm running the Magpul M-LOK QD Socket, which I really like.
