Guys,

First of all, new to the forum, hello everyone.

I've been wanting a Mark 11 for a while now, and decided that rather than wait for military demand to go down, I'm going to build an AR10 version.

My main question right now is what model base gun should I purchase? I'm considering the AR10AR in either the carbine or 20 inch platform. What I plan to do is at a later date, add a high end barrel and Larue rail, along with a PRS stock. I also plan on purchasing either Armalite's adjustable gas system, or someone elses. I haven't really researched that yet, so I have no idea what one. I do plan to purchase an Ops Inc silencer. We'll talk scopes at a later date. This build will probably take me a while, but I want to get the base gun purchased.

Is there any difference between the Carbine and Rifle version, or is it just the collapsable stock and barrel length? Feel free to comment on my choices, just give me an explanation why you would or wouldn't go the route I've chosen.

Build:
AR10, either carbine or 20 in rifle
10 Armalite Gen 2 20 round magazines
Larue AR10 FF rail system.
Pac-Nor 20 inch Barrel from Adco (considering Noveske 21 inch)
MagPul PRS Stock (considering VLTOR modstock)
Knights Armament 2 Stage Trigger
Kinghts Armament front and rear buis 600m
Sierra Precision AR15 Grip
Ops Inc. 12th Model 7.62 Silencer

Also,

I had considered that if I get the carbine and modstock, I could build a second upper and have a nice dual platform. Anyone know if Larue is going to be making thier Billet Upper for an AR10? That would be fantastic.

I would go with an Armalite upper and lower receiver, bolt group, etc. The stock is a personal thing - but personaly I don't care for the PRS or the SPR grip.

If you have money to burn, you might give George at GA Precision a call... He built a Mk11 clone that is pretty impressive, and I wouldn't doubt is better than factory. I'm not sure if he / they have a source, but the build used the real KAC Mk11 gas block and front sight - and those can be hard to come by. Also, They can provide an Obermeyer 5R 1 in 11 barrel for your build (not that there's anything wrong with Pac-Nor; have 'em, love 'em, but you did say "clone").

Sounds like you will have a really nice rifle when its all put together.

Hope this helps,
Clint

I'd probably opt for an Obermeyer 5R barrel and a Leupold Mark4 10x 3/4 Mildot

If you are going with a suppressed AR-10, stick with the 20". IMO, with the can 24" is too long, and anything under 20" you are losing too much of what a .308 is supposed to be.

The OPS 12th model is an excellent choice, but its HUGE (11") - its not heavy(28oz), but its long.
Heres a customer with a 12th model on his 24" AR10-T

Even with my crappy camera, you can hear the bullet impact on the berm 100yds away. For the relativity of the sounds - the "click" between shots is the shooter easing the trigger to reset.

The KAC trigger is crap compared to the Geissele - and thats not just me. I havent talked to anyone who has shot both and come to the same conclusion.

For a stock, go with the Vltor A1 clubfoot rifle stock on the 5 position receiver extension.

The PRS, is too big, too heavy, and all the features are in the wrong places. If you plan on running a big VG optic, the the PRS is good. If you know anything about shooting prone, the VLTOR is the way to go. Set up your rifle/optics properly and there is absolutely no need for an adjustabel cheek riser on and AR, or an extended LOP.

Here's my AR10 -I love it and wont change a thing - so build what you want and will enjoy shooting.

"The KAC trigger is crap compared to the Geissele - and thats not just me."

Bigbore,

Are the Geissele's that good? I'm running a KAC trigger with the SPR upper you built for me and I love it. At that time everyone was stating how I was wasting my money not getting the CMC instead. I still haven't fired the CMC, but there have since been a lot of reports of issues. I'm really happy with the KAC. I really like that you can loctite the set screws and it won't "re-adjust" on me. Mine is very smooth.

I value your opinion, so you can expand a little on what it has over the KAC?

"I'd probably opt for an Obermeyer 5R barrel"

Shivan,

Can you provide a source for this barrel? Thanks.

ETA: Nevermind Shivan, Google is my friend.
