View Full Version : Guru's is the Colt 6720 as mil-spec as the Colt 6920 in parts count?
Colts have come down in price in our neck of the the country. 6920 and 6920 $849. To $899. Side by side they look alike ,but for barrel profile. One M4 and other pencil. Both MP tested and castle nut ,bolt staked right. The 6720 does not have a F marked front site like the 6920. The 6720 came with magpul buis ,one magpul 20 rd magazine,no sling for $899. My 6920 a sling two 30rd mags . I have heard older 6920's came with a carry handle included with different L.E. markings. Site in with a Aimpoint T2 on a QD American Defender co-wittness mount was fast on a 25 meter aimpoint site in target. Retested at 50 yards was good. After Thanksgiving I will run it out to 200 yds. Has anyone noticed a group difference with the pencil barrel or tried the 62 S109 type ammo ? All I tried was the standard 55gr. FMJ ammo. Another concern is are the magpul 20 rd mags any good. I have the Brownell 20rd metal and they work very good. Are these newer Colt carbines still a solid build?
The only major difference is the barrel profile.
As a side note I prefer the 6720 over the 6920.

Yes, The Colt 6720 is of equal quality to a 6920. Personally I would prefer the 6720 to the 6920 due to the lighter profile.
What they said ^. I have a 6720 and love it. Same quality just different barrel and for my needs I prefer the pencil barrel in this application.
If I didn't carry a 6933 already at work, I'd be carrying my 6720. Great rifle. Another will be ordered soon for the wife. Considered a 6920 for hers to include the OEMs but that consideration didn't last long and the 6720 was solidified as the rifle of choice.
What's the total weight difference between the 6920 vs the 6720?
Is it appreciable or just slightly less weight?
I dont think the weight difference is significant. However its where the weight is shaved that makes a difference. Overall weight might not be that different but since the less weight is on the end of the barrel, the feeling of the rifle when shouldered and transitioning is significant.
Quick Google search had the 6920 Magpul edition at 6.9 pounds and the 6720 at 6.1 pounds. So slightly less than a pound.
Also G&R has the 6720 for 799.

In terms of "mil spec" before the M4 was issued we had what we called CAR-15's. They were carbines with A1 uppers and the same lighter profile barrel as on the 6720 but 14.5" long. As the M4 profile barrels became more prevalent, older skinny barrels were swapped out and sometimes a A2 upper with the 14.5" M4 profile barrel would be seen as well.
In terms of quality, I don't think you can go wrong with either the 6920 or 6720, just a matter a preference for some.
I agree feels more like this Gau.

Fail. The only appreciable difference in weight is due to the barrels.
Colt 6520: 1 pound, 6 ounces.

Has anyone noticed a group difference with the pencil barrel . . .
The barrel on the 6720 is the same barrel found on the 6520 . . .

Any precision differences between M193 clones and M855 clones fired from your chrome-lined, NATO chambered barrel will be mostly dependent on the brand of ammunition.

I have found the IMI 193 pretty accurate too! Good buy in my area $6.29 a box and late dated 2015. Good stuff.
Picked one up about two weeks ago. I moved the Reflex, rail, sling and light from my 6920 and added a Geissele SSA, BCM CH & grip, MA-TECH.
Only one trip to the range to zero and function check; ran 90rnds of American Eagle 55gr with no issues.

.
Since weights are listed on this thread, can anyone tell me the weight of a standard 6920 stock? None of my other searches have yielded anything on the standard Colt "M4" stock.

Mine weighs in at 6.4 oz.
