Hello folks was wondering if some one could help out. I came across a FN Hi-power this after noon. I've searched for info on date built by serial numbers and can't find anything. I'm not too familiar with this pistol. Serial number is 77C53xxx. It is for sale from a private buyer. Thanks in advance.

I found this http://www.browning.com/customerservice/dategun/detail.asp?id=35

Assuming it's accurate and was manufactured/imported/whatever by browning the pistol would have been made between 1954 and 1957. However wikipedia states that they moved to the external extractor in 62, so I'm guessing it's an FN gun and not a Browning? So, best I can figure is post 1962.

You might try contacting FN with the serial and see if the can help.

EDIT: I totally missed the C in the serial, ChunkNorris is right.

What exactly are you looking for... just the date of manufacture? According to Mcnab100's link it's a 1977 using this part of the text:

"In 1969 Browning started using two digits for the date of manufacture which was followed by a four digit code that identified the type of Auto-5:
C=Hi-Power
This was then followed by the serial number beginning with 1000.
Example: 69C1000 = A 1969 Hi-Power pistol with a serial number of 1000."

A 1954-1957 model wouldn't have a "C" in it's SN and only numbers. I see more script on the slide than normal for a Belgian FN but can't really make it out completely because of the pic.

Did you get the HP? The Mec Gar magazines work well in the hi-powers. They make them in the original 13 rounds and also in 15 rounds. If I remember correctly the 15 rounders are flush fitting and just a buck or two more than the 13 rounders. You can't go wrong with a hi-power!

I'll thank you now!

You're welcome. Enjoy that site now. Mr. Camp (RIP) died not long ago and I don't know how much longer it will be around.

Did you get the Hi Power?

They are my nostalgia pistol, carried one harms way for years and years.

I currently own 3, 2 made by big name Hi Power pistol smiths and a FEG clone. I plan on getting 3 more big name builds over the next few years.

3609736098360993610036101Thank you all for your responses, I picked her up last night. Have not had the chance to shoot it yet due to work. Only thing I see wrong is; 1. A small rust spot on the slide, 2. the rear sight is broken/missing, 3. It came with one after market mag.

Very nice! Yes factory blued Hi-Powers need the occasional "wipe down" to keep rust from spotting. I usually use a silicon gun wipe after I handle it. You might want to check to see if Novak has that factory correct rear sight. They do some amazing work on Hi-Powers and that MecGar mag should work nicely.
