So,
if you niche for a glock is with a rail, skip these.
If not, and you don't lie finger grooves,
I would jump on one.

Have not done cut down yet.
Youngest has not decided if going to run glock or metal gun to start uspsa

Picked up mine from the gun store today. I got a 17 and a 19, as well as 4 Magpul G17 mags. They even put in two gun locks and a way cool AIM sticker.

The G19 is a 3 letter prefix with an NY2 spring and original sights.

The G17 is a 2 letter prefix (LM) but has the black connector, and black ejector - both barely worn - hadn't seen black parts forever - didn't think Gen 2's had them, it is a Gen 2 frame, has the checkered front strap. It has an old style NY1 spring with the leaf spring. And some very dead night sights.

Barrels both looked to be in good shape, both pistols were cleaner than I thought they'd be.

I'm happy, I have something to do this winter, the 17 will be my first attempt at stippling something other than mags and plastic gun boxes.

ETA: Have any of you ever played around with drilling out old night sights?

Good to hear they're in good shape.

I got one of the Gen 2 19 trade ins recently that was practically new...debated getting one of the 17s to boot, but I already have a very worn Gen 2 17, so I went with a trade-in Sig P229.

Isn't this going to be the case with a lot of LEO trade-ins? Most that I know shoot their weapon to qualify and then it gets holstered until the next time around. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking it, I think it's wonderful that police work mostly ISN'T firearm related.)

I think that is a fair statement. I've found that agency size often doesn't make a difference, often it is the mindset of the agency administration and the firearms staff. Obviously very large agencies might have a hard time getting their officers through a semi-annual qualification. And very often smaller agencies don't have a lot of funding. Most officers don't go out of their way to maintain their proficiency unless they are on the clock.

The Law Enforcement Officer's Safety Act (LEOSA) required states to put into place provisions for retired officers to qualify so they could carry weapons. States had to have qualification standards for those officers. Our state inferred from the language of the bill that the standard had to be the same for both retired and active officers.

The folks that put together our course made the assumption that off-duty/retired officers would not carry supplemental ammunition, so reloads are not required. The time standards used are illogical, you actually have longer to fire rounds at the five yard line than at the ten and fifteen yard lines. Some of the stages have some sound tactics (diagonal movement off the threat axis and lateral movement off the threat axis) but others make no sense - as an example you have 10 seconds to fire two rounds strong hand, then transition to weak hand and fire two rounds. The instructions for this string of fire mandate two hands used to fire the weak hand rounds - so at seven yards with no cover, I'm figuring the only reason I'd be using my weak/support hand is if the other one didn't work - WTF? And adding insult to injury, the course is shot on the 'Q' target and only 10 rounds are shot beyond 15 yards, thus eliminating much of the measure of marksmanship ability.

We call it 'No Shooter Left Behind.' The agencies have to report any officers who do not qualify on this course each year, but they can let the officers shoot it as often as the agency allows. Unfortunately, some agencies now make this the standard and have curtailed their firearms training accordingly.

And we wonder why cops don't shoot.

Pretty much.

I have three Glocks, several berettas, and a couple of smith and Wesson 10mms that were LE trade ins.

They range from pristine, to externally beat to hell but little fired, to moderate external and moderate firing.

I would buy LE trade guns all day compared to EE stuff off sites like this or USPSA type sites.

Edit

For example, I went through 600 rounds this weekend in one gun alone.
While some people may not have been through 600 rounds in all their guns put together in their life.
I would not be a good guy to buy a gun from.

Update:

Replaced springs (all), extractors, and strikers. Went shooting. The 17 is a tack driver, shoots real good, I ordered a set of Dawson Precision sights for it.

The 19, not so good. The cases I picked up from the 19 all had 'burn' marks along the case sides just about to the base. As a check I tried to push the fired cases into the chamber of the 17. They went, but I had to push, and they didn't drop free, had to run the slide. I had to do shade tree because at the present my 9mm cartridge gage is AWOL.

I had planned to eventually buy threaded barrels for both, I'll be getting one for the 19 ASAP.

All in all, still happy.

Out of spec chamber or actually shot a lot and worn? In general my Glocks seem to have tighter chambers from the factory than my berettas

My conclusion is neither - there was some evidence of polishing the feed ramp, I'm wondering if someone got carried away and thought they'd go into the chamber. I looked closer at all the components and it appears the hump on the trigger bar has been very slightly altered and the edges on the factory safety plunger have been polished. So I believe someone has been in there, didn't really see any evidence on the connector and tab, though.

Barrel, trigger bar, and several different trigger and striker springs are on the way. (I've never really fooled with aftermarket springs, so what the heck)

My wasn't exactly in "great shape," but I've seen worse. Grey NY "2" connector, one mag, rear sight pushed all the way over to the right, dead night sights. No range time yet, but feeds and ejects snap caps (even from P-mags).

Mine was bone dry and lint filled with appropriate (for it's age- KY prefix, 1990 manufacture) marked up passenger side while the drivers side looked great….

Are these the "black" parts (connector and locking block) that should be replaced??

My iPad doesn't want to let me link it, but...

Glockparts.com should have everything you need. It's where I've gotten all my stuff for a bunch of used Glocks.

Glockparts is backordered, too. http://glockparts.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=126609&CAT=3649

Shouldn't be for too long, though - it's not like they're rare.

I seem to remember Grant at G&R Tactical having spring kits. I may be wrong though. Glockmeister appears to have all of the springs I need.

I would upgrade the following if they haven't been already:

1:Firing Pin
2:Extractor(Non-LCI/90 Degree Extraction Port)
3:Firing pin safety and spring
4:Spring loaded bearing(Non-LCI/90 Degree Extraction Port)
5:Trigger bar(trigger assembly)

This is part of the 6 part upgrade(recall) that Glock implemented in the early 1990s.

If you go to a GSSF Match the Glock Amourers will replace the parts for free.

The old parts have a black finish and the new parts have a silver finish.

I would replace the recoil spring assembly with a current one as well.

Have you looked at Glockmeister? You can get any of the spring kits or entire parts kits (both upper and lower).

Wish I had known about this while they were still available. I've always wanted a Gen 2 model 19. I just love those frames.

Warranty service? Are you telling me they do this for free? Somehow I feel like I've missed something.

Not too long ago I traded into a Gen 2 G17 that had been owned by a co-worker since new. Literally the only thing I did was stuck a fresh set of Meprolights on it. Though I have not shot it much, maybe 6-700 rounds, it has been flawless with both ball and 124 grain Gold Dots. It has become a spare/HD gun, stashed in a Go-Bag.

I have long wanted a Gen 2 G19, but with 2 Gen 3 G19s, I just have not been able to justify it (yet). Other fun toys have come first, but eventually it would be nice to have a Gen 2 version. A few years back I picked up a Gen 1 G17 from a coworker, who inherited it from their dad. It literally spent it's life in a saddle bag on a ranch in Nevada, and I honestly believe that the cowboy had never even field stripped it. It was horribly filthy, and bone dry, but again, functioned flawlessly. A true testament to the ruggedness of the design.

In fact, the Glock 9mms remind me of the Ruger Blackhawk design, in terms of ability to shrug off neglect.

Pic features a Gen 1 G17, Gen 2 G17, and a Gen 3 G19, along with enough parts to keep them running for the foreseeable future.
