View Full Version : DBAL-A3 and Geissele SMR Mk8 - Which mount for 1 o'clock Ultra Scout?

I was just in the midst of an upgrade package to one of my guns. Built a new 16" upper with a Geissele SMR Mk8 rail. The trouble I've found now is for getting a Scout light mounted to my preference. That being DBAL at the 12 o'clock, light at the 1 o'clock, so that I can activate either with my left hand thumb.

Old picture example from an older rifle:

I ordered a Magpul MLOK cantilever mount and direct mounted the Scout light to it. Unfortunately that holds it too close to the DBAL and I can't get the light into position to screw the MLOK nuts in.

My first thought was to order another Haley mount since that's what I used on my prior builds, but it looks like they don't make anything for MLOK.

What would you guys recommend for a mount that will fit at the 1 o'clock? A direct mount preferably. I could use a Haley Thorntail mount on a picatinny rail section on the side, but that seems inelegant.

edit1: Current options I'm looking at are the Unity Tactical VTAC Micro hub and Arisaka MLOK inline mount.

Does anyone have experience with either allowing the light to clear the DBAL at 1 o'clock?

edit2: ordered an Arisaka offset mount and inline mount. Going to experiment with both and report back for science!

Update. Tested the inline mount with the DBAL-i2 I currently have on hand (waiting for a buddy to have the funds for it later this week.) The A3 is due in the mail later this week, but I thought I'd try it out with this and see.

In the center position on the inline mount, it almost lines up properly, but the Scout body touches the DBAL's mount and prevents the mount from seating fully in the MLOK slot. This may be solvable by taking the Scout body to a bench grinder to remove those protrusions (which are there only for the Scout thumbscrew mount) or by using an aftermarket Scout body like Arisaka's.

However, on the outside-most slot, the one closest to the 3 o'clock, it does clear.

In both cases, the green laser that's on the i2's right side clears the flashlight head easily and without any reflection.

Gonna hold off on loctiting anything down till I get the A3 and test fit on that.

Unfortunately, there's really no good way of knowing what works and what doesn't until you try to do it yourself.

So many combinations with rails and mounts and lasers and lights.

I know, because I'm in the same boat. My DBAL throw lever on my KMR rail would hit my M300 in an IWC Scout KM mount. However it would work if I used a gear sector mount and a Centurion rail. Too many combinations for there to be an easy consensus of what works and what does not.

Yup, that's why I figured I'd post my results. Sometimes I find the answers to my gun parts questions via Google when a post from here or TOS comes up, but most of the time I don't. This way if someone else has the same issue, they have an answer.

is there a problem with just grinding it?

Update now that I have an A3 in hand.

Unfortunately, the inline mount won't work. The A3 has a protrusion on the bottom right side that prevents it from fitting the same as with an i2.

i2 on the left, A3 on the right.

It sticks out enough that it prevents you from getting the light into position to screw in.

On the plus side, the Arisaka offset mount works just fine. Had to use the second from the bottom screw position, but it fits.

It clears the lasers too, of course.
