Went hunting a while back. A friend of mine had a ton of doe tags issued. He's been having some problems on his property and needed lots of does dispatched. In any situation requiring a quick response, lots of firepower and general indiscretion - you call in the Marines. So I went. :dirol:

Rifle was a 14.5" Noveske 300BLK firing 18.8gr of 296 and Barnes 110gr Tac TX.

I made several hits on does out to 350 yards.

One of the Spots. The far tree line is around 400 yards away.

Can't go hunting without getting at least one buck. He was at 125 yards but he was below me. I was in a stand and he was down a hill, so the shot I had was actually aimed down at his back. The round hit his spine above his left shoulder and exited out near his right lung. He was DRT.

The exit wound on this beast was pretty big. It looked like it was a full 1" in diameter.

This is one of those 60lb does. I almost didn't shoot her because she was so stupid. I was grabbing another doe I had just shot, and walked around some bushes and she was just sitting there eating. She couldn't have been further than 15 yards. This is one of those weird situations where I shot poorly because she was so close. She startled me and my scope was at 8x so I just put the reticle on fur and shot. She dropped immediately.

The main issue I had with this round at distance is the trajectory. I did not have a LRF but I had landmarks that had been LRF'd by the land owner so I knew how far deer were approximately. Even still, there were close calls due because of the enormous arc of the round at distance. At 300 yards if you are 25 yards off in range estimation you will miss by 6". I'm not that good, so I passed on quite a few.

For shots closer than 200 yards, every single deer I shot dropped. Some wiggled for a bit, some died immediately, but every single one was DRT whether it was a spine hit, heart shot, or shoulder hit.

Even on the 300+ yard shots the rounds were through and through. I didn't recover a single bullet all weekend. They all expanded reliably and the exit wounds on every animal (whether it was a shoulder hit, or a clean lung shot) were insanely big. I wish I had found a bullet because I wanted to see what they were doing upon impact. For reliable, big time expansion at 300 yards from a 300BLK-type round I haven't seen anything that comes close. Any problems with this rounds stopping power at distance are not due to lack of expansion.

I have had the same performance using a 7.62 x 39 bolt gun with the 123 gr TSX loaded at 2400 fps. Very impressive indeed. 7 shots, 7 dead animals - 4 deer (including a nice 170# 9pt), 2 small pigs and a coyote.
