A SWAT officer went to sniper school using a high round count factory stocked 700P.
He was told he needed an adjustable stock, so the dept purchased him a HS Precision Tactical (adjustable) and asked me to put it together. An older 700P DM .308 with a lower round count was brought back to life after storage for many years.
I had to modify the stock a little to accept the factory DM and noticed the mags fit very sloppy in the trigger guard/magwell set up.
Initially, having issues with the mag seating (front edge of the mag was making contact with the underside of the feed ramp) but realized the barreled action needed to be set back against the bedding block. This provided the necessary clearance for the mag to seat.
I noticed the mag (2) fits very sloppy into the magwell. Upon trying to feed a round out of the mag, the bolt slips over the round, however if you press upward on the mag (taking the slop out and squaring the mag with the magwell), the bolt will push the round out of the mag.
I decided to return the barreled action back to the factory stock and the mag also fits very sloppy and has intermittent feed issues.
I did take apart both mags, very dirty and cleaned them up. But that did nothing but take the crunchy noise out of the mags.
is this common with factory Rem DM set ups? (we had another rifle set up with the same stock but this was standard hinged floor plate. that stock bolted right on and that officer is please with his set up)
I would like to order a new trigger guard/mag well, to see if that tightens up mag but knowing nothing is ever a true bolt on…..
any other suggestions would be helpful.
if fitting and bedding is required, this may be above my expertise and not sure I want to be messing with a $700 stock with no experience in that area.
While the rifle is documented with a low round count, that does not mean someone in the past might have made some changes which is rearing its ugly head now.
thanks in advance
