"CMMG is proud to offer our new .308 G3 mag compatible semi-auto lower. Upper is compatible with DPMS .308 upper receivers with minor modification to upper receiver to allow for clearance of wider G3 magazine. With new mags available $3-5, this is a combo that cannot be beat. Lower is compatible with most popular aftermarket triggers currently on the market. We are accepting pre-orders. We are looking to begin shipping the month of Sept."

Hmm....This looks pretty interesting....

I'm guessing the main benefit is the cheap magazines?

Cheap mags and maintaining the AR ergos and manual of operations.

Hmmm, verrrrrrrrrrry interesting. The only concern I have is the type of modification that needs to be done to the upper and if it something the end-user ca easily do.

Wow, this is interesting.

Using cheap and extremely reliable H&K G3 magazines is a damn smart idea.

I see a .308 CMMG/DPMS in my future! :D

I don't know much about the G3 mags. How is the reliability and why are they so cheap compared to other mags?

This, and the reliability of the magazine combo...

Availability. At the last "Nation's Gun Show" in Chantilly, VA a dealer had a crate full that he was selling for $5 each.

So... when do they make a chrome lined, 18 or 20 inch lightweight top half? :D

this is great with a ptr-91 in the closet with 50 mags -[ar-10 with hk mags lighter on the recoil] love it !!! nice to set up a different lower for the cheaper mag /stock ....in germany an gun maker[cant be imported] makes Oberland Arms OA-10 doing this now CMMG doing here GREAT!

I paid $30 for 10 at the Nations gun show last year, only 7 worked, the other 3, 1 FTF, 2 failed to fully seat in the rifle.
Cheap yes, reliable? probably not the ones that have been sitting in Jim's garage for the last 10 years going to every gun show he set up at.....WAITING for someone to want them.

The mags are cheap because Germany surplussed them out 10 years ago.

At one time, you could get very good condition mags for $1.00 each.

There are a metric shit-ton in the US.

I like the idea and applaud their innovation, but doesn't that price seem a tad high? I expect it to be up a little bit, but that seems a bit much.
Am I missing something?

Quite frankly, I'd rather see a lower that took stock M14 mags.

Ergonomics be damned.

But... G3 mags are cheap, durable, and lightweight. Good qualities to have, provided they make some uppers.

That looks like a great idea, too bad I already bought 3 extra mags for my LR-308 this year. :(

Maybe I will just have to build another. :D

Bear in mind though, that unless they are going to make a new follower, G3 magazines have NO provision for a bolt hold open.

I am deeply skeptical re: the reliability of this combo as a weapon system.

Time will tell, I suppose.

I am as well - but that's just me - and you too I suppose.... :D

I was intrigued when Bushmaster released their version which used FAL mags and it looks like it was not a successful bird. I as well would have liked to have seen an M-14 mag version, (unmodified M-14 mags). I can understand the draw to the uber-surplused G3 mags I guess.....

If memory serves on AR10 issues, using unmodified M14 mags is possible, but they'd rock in, need some kind of special bolt stop, and would probably need the same release as the M14 (paddle). Arguably this would cause ergonomics issues, but so would using an M14, AK or G3.

What does the mysterious "with minor modification to upper receiver" mean?

Having fired the G3 numerous times in Germany during partnership training I can't be overly excited about this. Mags can be good, but you would really need to check them out, and as mentioned no last round hold open. Personally I am in the opinion that though these mags are cheap, they fall into the disposable AR mag category.

Now if Magpul were to partner up and make some G3 mags that may make a significant difference. As long as people could overcome the no bolt hold open situation.

On paper I love it. Do I $500 dollar love it with upper modifications?

No.

You can get a full DPMS Sportical for $810 from RGuns http://www.rguns.net/009_100.html

Pick how many "cheap" mags you want, build the rifle, then compare with any DPMS/Armalite build you can think of for the same price.

So now we have what, 3.5 AR10 style guns on the market?

Standardize some more parts for the platform and then maybe we'll talk. If I really need a .308 autoloader now, the Saiga is looking pretty good. In the mean time I'll wait to see what the ACR, XCR, and SCAR-H have for me.
