View Full Version : Sig P227 - Anyone liking it?

I ordered one on Black Friday and so far, I'm really enjoying it. Bought the ESE model. Was in the market for a double stack .45ACP and this one caught my eye. The short reset trigger is awesome although I can't say much for the skinny trigger it comes with. Just a tad too short trigger pull for me so going to put an original Sig fatty in at some point. Just curious if anyone else has one and what you think of it.

The Sig P227 is my department issued handgun. There is a lot I like about the gun and very little I don't like.

Pro's:
Feel - the E2 grips are very well textured. I also enjoy the fatter grips, say what you will, but the wider the grip, the more surface area on your hand the recoil is absorbed. In comparison the the thinner P220, recoil is more comfortable with the P227.
Undercut trigger guard and front checkering. Contrary to the standard P226 and P229, the P227 comes with front checkering which makes it so much more pleasant in the hand.
Controls - I like Sig controls on their DA/SA pistols. The slide lock and slide release are positioned where I am used to. Some people accidentally release the slide when the gun locks back on the last round. I have trained myself to position my thumbs away from accidentally manipulating the slide release so this isn't an issue for me, but other guys on my department often complain about it. (They are generally striker fire shooters who hated switching from Glock to Sig per department regulations.) A lot of left handed people do not like the Sig P series because they are not ambidextrous.
Magazine release - bar none, the Sig P227's magazine release is the best magazine release I have ever used. It is contoured more so than a regular circular magazine release. It's very easy to depress and ergonomic as well.
SRT Trigger - I love the short reset trigger. My P227 came with it installed, but I am not sure an off the shelf one would come standard with it.

Con's:
Magazine Capacity - the biggest con I have is the 10 round flush magazine capacity. For a duty pistol, I am more in favor for more rounds. On my duty belt, I carry only 2 spare magazines and carry a total of 31 rounds on me. In today's day and age, multiple assailants are attacking places (San Bernardino, Paris, etc) and I would like to have more than 31 rounds on my duty belt. Sig makes 14 round extended magazines for the P227 and they are massive and cumbersome. For the size of the P227, its capacity is pretty low. In my opinion, I think that the Sig P227 would be perfect if its flush capacity was 12 or 13 rounds. A Glock 21 magazine holds 13 rounds and it is very similar in size to the Sig P227.
Magazine Construction - some of the other officers on my department have had issues with the feed lips on their P227 magazines. I have not experienced any issues but thought I should mention it. Apparently the feed lips would bend and even on an empty magazine, the slide would not catch and lock back (even when the shooter was cognizant of not hitting the slide release on accident). Feeding ammo was not an issue but the slide locking back on an empty magazine was.
Short Reach Trigger* - I originally had the short reach trigger installed on my P227 but asked if the armorer would put the fat trigger on. Once this change was made, my trigger finger felt much better and my groups tightened. The P227's ship with the short reach trigger, but you can install the fat trigger without much hassle. Youtube videos show how to do this. I have installed the fat triggers myself before, but was not allowed to touch my department P227, only a certified armorer was allowed to alter my pistol.

In all, the P227 is one of my favorite pistols. I think it is a very well made .45. Hope this helps you.

As far as I know, I believe as if 2019, the Indiana State Police and Pennsylvania State Police are the only two agencies to issue the P227. I am also saddened to learn that the P227 was discontinued from Sig’s production line in February of 2019.

Great eval. Thanks and I agree on the capacity, especially when the new PPQ holds 12 and like you said the 21 holds 13.

I'm hoping and waiting on MecGar to make a flush fitting increased capacity magazine. On the Sig MK25 the standard capacity is 15 rounds, but MecGar makes a flush fitting 18 round magazine. It would be great if they could get a few more rounds into a flush fitting P227 magazine. Something like a 12 or 13 round magazine would go a long way.

A 13 round flush fit, if Mec-Gar/Sig could figure it out, would give the same capacity as the Glock 21. I think that would elevate the P227 more. The M&P45 runs a 10 rounder as well if memory serves correctly.

As well as the HK45. I just bought a p227 SAS yesterday, I am going to try and see if I can get out after I get off work this morning and put at least 50 rounds through it. So far just from handling it, I am in love with the gun.

I shot one and hoped to like it. It seemed to have more recoil than I was expecting (more than a P220 in 45 IMO) The concept is good but I just don't see it getting much traction. Not getting much more over a P220 (2 rds per mag isn't much)

Bought one New Years Eve 2014. Paid $699, $718 delivered to my FFL. IMHO it is the finest most accurate pistol I and my son have ever shot. I love the E2 grips, and feel that the E2's are the reason for the superb accuracy.

It seems to be gaining traction, at least here in PA. The State police have switched to the P227.

Mine really shoots well, even my lighter 200gr LSWC handloads. Hoping for better aftermarket mags also.

Yeah it would be nice to get a few more rounds in there but I would like them to be flush fitting. I have a SAS model and mine is certainly a shooter.

The ones I handled I was not that impressed with but that was my take on them. Perhaps they have improved them since I had my hands on one as it was one of the first that came out.

Has anyone fired the P227 alongside the HK45? I am wondering how the two compare.

Thanks

I have not fired the P227, but I have extensive trigger time on the P220 and the P226. In my opinion aside from capacity (same as the 227), the HK45 is the finest polymer 45 on the market.

In the end it comes down to personal preference. Both are quality handguns. I'm partial to the Sig due to years of experience shooting both the 226 series of handguns and not really liking polymer frame guns. Although I just picked up a 320c in 9mm and am really liking it.

I had planned on purchasing a P227 at some point due to my fondness of the P226. I'd just get a P226, but I need another 9mm like I need a knot on my head. Now I'm leaning more towards the P320 in .45 and just getting the P226. Of course, I should also look at the PPQ in .45 as I love my M1 PPQ. I just wish the .45s had the paddle mag release.

Had one for a year but sold it. Shot it well and liked it, but my thumb kept riding the slide release lever. More a grip problem than a Sig problem, but I couldn't shake it.

Have had P320 Carry in 45 for a couple of months and really like this pistol. Have owned P220's and P226 but not P227, and would say I strongly prefer the P320 45.

Yep. Owned both until about a month ago. From a bench I found the P227 had a slight edge in accuracy. Overall handling I found both about equal. I found the HK45 wouldn't feed Critical Duty ammo at all reliably, the SIG wasn't so picky. No problems in either pistol with HST, Gold Dot, or Golden Saber, etc.
In the end, after about 2K fired, I came to the conclusion I really hated both pistols equally but for different reasons, all personal preference.

I just handled the P320 in .45. It seems very nice, but whereas the high bore axis in 9mm is usually not a big deal, how is this different in .45? Thanks.

What kind of velocity is the 320 Carry 3.9" barrel getting 230 grain self defense/duty loads up to? I like my .45's to have a 4.25" barrel at least.

You'll be splitting hairs on that one. I can't find my charts right now but the decline is negligible.

I have a glock 30 and have most 230 grain loads (HST, Gold Dots, and Rangers) and they generally shoot at about 790-820 fps. I would figure the P320 Carry would be right in that range as well.

My three inch Kimber CDP Ultra pushed a 230gr speer gold dot out at about 760 to -800 fps.

Just curious what you hated about the P227? What did you prefer to use instead?

[QUOTE=Symmetry;2251058]Just curious what you hated about the P227? What did you prefer to use instead?[

The factory E2 grips worked loose after 500rnds and had a lot of movement to the point I could feel it under recoil. Tried refitting the grip unit several times to no avail. Also didn't really like the overall handle shape after awhile. Switched to Hogue G10 grips and while they helped a bit, the pistol still didn't feel "right" for me. I used the P220/226 almost exclusively for near 15yrs with a few excurisons into striker fired territory, and the P227 handle was just different enough to not make me love it the way I do other SIGs.
I also prefer the USP45 over the HK45 for a few similar reasons.

Thanks for the info. I also have been using the P226 for a number of years. I've carried they P220 too, but found the elongated grip to be long enough for my hand size to prevent me from reaching my full potential. The 9/40/357 sized grip in the P226/P228/P229 was just right for me.

I learned that Sig has discontinued the P227 as of February 2019. Sad news as Sig seems to be dropping some great pistols, P227 and P239. The world wants striker fired handguns but some of us still love the metal framed DA/SA classic Sigs.

I am a fan of the P227. I found that wolf springs in the 14 round magazines really enhanced reliability for me.
