LONDON (AP) — British actor Alan Rickman, a classically-trained stage star and sensual screen villain in the “Harry Potter” saga and other films, has died. He was 69.

Rickman’s family said Thursday that the actor had died after a battle with cancer.

Trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Rickman was often cast as the bad guy; with his rich, languid voice he could invest evil with wicked, irresistible relish.

His breakout role was as scheming French aristocrat the Vicomte de Valmont in an acclaimed 1985 Royal Shakespeare Company production of Christopher Hampton’s “Les Liaisons Dangereuses.”

Film roles included the psychopathic villain Hans Gruber in “Die Hard” in 1988; a deceased lover who consoles his bereaved partner in 1990’s “Truly Madly Deeply”; the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham in “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” in 1991; and a wayward husband in 2003 romantic comedy “Love Actually.”

I know...so close in age and time of passing. It's a crappy start to the new year.

My first thought too...

Been awhile since we had a good P7 thread.

A good villain always uses a German gun going way back to the 60's when ex Nazi's populated the Combloc side of the Cold War. P-08 Lugers, and P-38's were their favorites, then came the P7.

Thank you. Much as I loved Die Hard, Galaxy Quest was awesome.

He also played a great role in a film called "Bottle Shock", a movie based on the blind tasting in Paris when CA first beat French wines

Bottle Shock was a surprisingly good film...

But nothing beats Die Hard. One of my all time favorites.

Aye. It's the best Christmas film ever. Seeing Carl Winslow K5 the Steyr AUG guy at the end was like the 1980s equivalent of Tiny Tim walking and saying "God bless us everyone"

That's it then. Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings, and call off Christmas!

Could you imagine the kind of bad guy this guy could have been in Game of Thrones?

I'm imagining either an evil Tyrion or a Tywin with a sense of humor.
