Is anyone using a set up like this? I know most run 12-15 inch rails. I like the clamp grip for my purposes but I also have short T-Rex arms and don't want a bunch of extra weight and material swinging at the end of my rifle if not needed.

I was thinking the other day the Jack Carbine and the EAG carbine perhaps were designed with this in mind. Others might have a better idea about this.

Yes but I have a long reach. You need to protect your lopro gb (>10") but too long and your light laser are harder to get to or have to be switched. Better balance is good too but 1lb can cancels it out

The EAG runs a fsb, and the Jack is a 14.5 but it does come out to 16 inches.

I have a 10" KMR on my SBR, and ergos are ok. I have a light on there, and longish arms, which make me wish for a couple more inches. With short arms and setting it up so you can grip the very end of the rail, I don't see why an 11" would be bad.

I suggest grabbing another AR and marking 11" and 13" and seeing where your hand ends up.

Sounds like a good idea. Does anyone have a picture of the set up in question? I can't find one for the life of me.

I used a 12" rail on my 14.5" middy. If I remember correctly, the 10" gas block length comment is about correct. I'll track down my pics and post them for you. No reason an inch on a rail should be too heavy though. Gas block is 2" from end of rail but hard to see.

It's not so much weight as my ability to reach things. I have a 15 inch rail on my rifle now because I got it for a song but it's long for my arms and they way I like to grip. I'm thinking the 11inch would be a happy medium

OP, I've often thought that setup would be the optimal portable and well-balanced FF carbine.

I started with a 15" rail on a 16" midlength. It's more rail than I need. I also have an 11" rail on a 16" midlength and it's a little less than I want but not too bad. I have really long arms. 13" is my sweet spot for future rifles but I don't find the 11" objectionable. It handles nicely and has a clean, non rail-heavy look. I don't plan on changing it.

I studied at the better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it school. Think about a 13" KMR. The 2-3 inches you think you don't need weigh hardly anything, a longer sight radius is a plus and it opens up more light mounting options.

I vote keep what you have or go to 13". Just b/c it's long, doesn't mean you need to grab it out there. But as stated above, gives you better light/sight/bipod options without cluttering stuff up.

I also have a shorter reach. It is a bit short for my nearly 6' tall son.
