Yesterday my DEA neighbor showed me his issued semi-auto Rock River AR (can't recall the model), chambered in .223, 14.5" chrome barrel, EOTech 552 with some funky 2-point sling, rear sight for co-witness, hogue stype handgrip, surefire light.

Don't really know anything about them, just curious why they selected Rock River, .223, semi.

Because RRA blew smoke up their ass, named it the DEA model & gave them a good price.

IMO it was due to a good price, but when they first started RRA made good stuff.

why .223 vs 5.56?

So nobody cares when they turn them over to the cartel in the next F&F.:)

RRA was one of the weapons that survived the reliability and accuracy test in 2003. The weapons had to pass a 5,000 round reliability test, with the DEA having the option to require a pair of carbines fire an additional 5,000 rounds. Bids were solicited from the companies that submitted carbines that survived the testing, then RRA won the bid.

Some of the vendors who participated in the test did not have carbines that met testing criteria and the companies were not allowed to bid. A few vendors submitted carbines that were reliable, but did not pass accuracy testing after the 5,000 round reliability test.

I had the opportunity to shoot one their DEA contract carbines along with other individuals at an event in the Midwest. It had a 14.5" chrome lined barrel and chrome bolt carrier group. We abused the hell out of the carbine and it kept running. Accuracy at 200 yards was acceptable for a filthy carbine that had been beaten badly.

I did not care for the EO-Tech sight and sling that came with the DEA package, so I did not buy one.

why .223 vs 5.56?

Most (not all) quality duty ammo is .223. There really isn't a need to be mil-spec chambered.

In a perfect world you may be right. Although we see plenty of agencies using 5.56 as well. Bigger issue is that they are also using M193 and clone ammo for range use and it causes problems.

Oh indeed. My agency included as far as the 5.56 chamber goes. And good lord re: the use of M193 in the .223s.
