I'm mounting optics on a Savage 10FLP (that's the LH model), with a goal of setting it up for long-range shooting (target or competition), and could use a few ideas if anyone can help with these questions.
Scope Bases
* Is the 1-piece mount the best way to go (I assume it is stronger, and helps keep everything in better alignment)? Are there any drawbacks to 1-piece that I should think through first, for instance, will there be any issues with it given I have a LH action on the rifle?
* Assuming I go with the 1-piece, does anyone know if Ken Farrell's rails (http://www.kenfarrell.com/SAV-RTS-1-20.html) or the Warne rails (http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=619724&t=11082005) are good quality, or should I stick with something like Badger Ordnance?
Rings
* What are some brands of rings that give you good performance and value? I'm considering a set of the Burris Xtreme rings, and also looked at Millett's tactical rings. But as with the rail, I'm not sure if these are in the same class as the rings that run twice or more what these cost (such as Warne's or Badger's tactical rings).
* As for ring height, I am probably getting a scope with a 42mm objective with a 1-inch tube. The Leupold guide says for this size I probably need what most brands designate as "medium" height rings, at a minimum. Is there any reason to consider bumping up the ring height one notch, say to "high", to give a little more clearance, or should I try to keep the scope as low as possible?
* How do you decide if you need to lap the rings on a new installation, and if you do, is there a reliable guide online that I could follow for lapping my rings?
