Today is the 83rd anniversary of the enactment of the Blaine Act, which led to the repeal of Prohibition in the America. So, please, raise a toast for Mr. Blaine, and liberty, if you're so inclined.

When people say they'll never get away with banning guns, I point to Prohibition.

THEY BANNED FREAKING ALCOHOL WITH A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT!!! Alcohol! Think about it: a bunch of do-gooder nib-noses (Cary Nation and her ilk) actually made enough noise to have g-damned alcohol banned!

I cannot fathom Prohibition. Those that ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

I don't drink anymore. In the past I probably drank enough beer to float a battleship in a drydock, seriously.. I really don't care how much anybody else drinks, as long as you're not driving drunk. Prohibition was probably the dirtiest trick the government ever pulled on the people.. It's a stunt that should NEVER be forgotten. Abnak is quite right.. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it...And, we've got a whole country full of people whose idea of "history" might extend to last year... The idea that a Constitutional Amendment was passed to prohibit the sale of alcohol, to placate a minority group is stunning.. It's something to think about. This just goes to prove that corrupt government is capable of anything...

I do not take well to people being willing to ban something they don't agree with or understand, for any reason, that does not interfere with their personal pursuit of Liberty. Most “noble experiments” are an f-ing disaster and blows up in the face of those who force them on the society they are intending to help. The parallel is the war on drugs, but instead of learning from the “noble experiment” they doubled down. What they say about those who ignore history and that all...

Hey everybody, keeping in mind this is general discussion what do you think we should have done differently?

I agree with Will, the war on drugs has been an abject failure - you can still buy any drug you want in pretty much any community in America. My experience is that many of the folks who signed on to fight the war and have done their damnedest to stem the flow, but haven't been able to, feel the same way. They keep chugging along because they believe their cause is noble.

So what is the answer?

Education. And a social support network (i.e. peer-pressure). But mostly education.

It is actually frightening that an delusional, insane person who committed acts of property damage was actually able to start a movement that ended with an amendment to the Constitution prohibiting alcohol, something the founding fathers would all have opposed. But they did it, and it wasn't 200 years ago, it was in the big picture fairly recent and really only resulted in making millionaires of of criminals like Al Capone and Joe Kennedy.

As for the devout, religious woman.

Suspicious that President William McKinley was a secret drinker, Nation applauded his 1901 assassination because drinkers "got what they deserved."

So she cheered the death of a US President based upon personal suspicion. Clearly moonbats are nothing new.

I think we should deport cocaine / crack addicts to Columbia where they can enjoy the source of their drug of choice and we can send heroin addicts to Afghanistan so they can enjoy the source of their drug of choice.

That should solve a lot of problems right off the bat.

That's actually not a bad idea.
But what do we do with crystal meth addicts? Send them to trailer parks? Most of them are already there. lol!

It wasn't just Bible thumpers and suffragettes. I forget his name but one of the big wigs behind the 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act was one of the biggest profiteers from bootlegging.

Just remember, before some Socialists decided they knew better than you; you could buy full auto, suppressors, morphine, weed, and booze and smokes over the counter if not at a pharmacy. Coca Cola had real cocaine.

So much freedom. If you didn't like something you didn't do it.

But hey, it's only freedom

ETA I remember a great uncle saying he bought filterless cigarettes and he was like ten. And nobody cared. He lived to be 68 which is like 100 by the standards of those days.

Die happy dammit.

Clearly we will have to set up a FEMA camp somewhere in Oklahoma.

When my grandfather went to the hardware store for a bucket of nails, they had two Thompsons on the wall for sale and cases of dynamite in back. It was all for sale.

By all means, it'd be great if "full auto, suppressors, morphine, weed, and booze and smokes over the counter if not at a pharmacy" were the case, but it's not. And for a damn good reason: it'd infringe on others' rights too far often.

Let's hope you don't do anything foolish, bro. You wouldn't happen to own more than six firearms?

Are you kidding me? Real men don't own or use any firearms, ever. Men fight with swords, so they may see each other's eyes.

Is it a problem if you have more than six swords?
