View Full Version : Receiver End Plate Sling Mount For Colt Question
Would it be better to use a clamp on style sling mount instead of the regular replacement end plate held on by the buffer tube castle nut if you have a factory staked castle nut? I have no issue removing the castle nut but would it be more wise to preserve the factory staking for long term durability? I have read where some say staking of the castle nut isn't really needed and vice versa.
You could easily re-stake the castle nut after you put on the new end plate. It does not require moving much metal to accomplish what you want. Use a center punch or a smallish flat blade screwdriver (good quality).

Most of those clamp on type sling mounts will end up rotating on you eventually. Unless it is a duty weapon that you are prohibited to alter I'd replace the end plate and re-stake it. I suggest the IWC and MI versions for their solid one piece construction and limited rotation QD socket.

My local dealer has the IWC and Magpul plates in stock at a good price. I didn't see any QD socket mounts from MI that wasn't a clamp-on style at their site.

For duty guns, or guns I don't want to alter, you can't beat the PR-4 from Tango Down: https://tangodown.com/shop/tangodown-pr-4-sling-mount/. Pat Rogers is a big fan of them as well.
