View Full Version : WML and Muzzle Device proximity concerns

I just added a WML to my 14.5" BCM middy with 13" KMR rail. In order to place the light in an appropriate position, the mount is all the way forward and the light sits very close to the muzzle device. While it is an LED (do they even make incandescent light anymore?), I am concerned as to whether the light can take the abuse from the muzzle device. For the record the light is a Streamlight Polytac. I chose this light only because I have been using Streamlight products at work with no issues since 2007.

Here are a few pics for reference

I'd get a different flashlight. That one is too long.

It'll probably work.... for at least the first round.

I had a similar setup with the BCM keymod mount and a Surefire G2X. I moved the light back as far as I could without hitting the front sight ( I was using a Troy front also). It worked fine, but there were some burn marks on the side of the front bezel, never affected function though.

A little bit of fouling on the bezel and even glass after 100 rounds is normal. Honestly I think you'll be fine. Just go to the range, shoot through a mag and use your best judgement.

I used to run my light that far forward. Put roughly 1K with an Elzetta about even with the flash hider. I have since moved it back so the front of the light is now about even with the base of the flash hider (but that was to access the front sling attachment point on my rail, had nothing to do with the light). Light still runs the same as day 1, just a little fouling as previously mentioned. I would suggest one of the myriad of "tricks" to keep your WML lens clean while training: tape, toothpaste, chapstick, Vaseline... pick your poison

That's too far forward for my liking. I'd set it 2 or 3 picatinny slots back.

I'd pull it back so that the front of the light is up to the beginning of the MD.

My only concern is that the flashlight is made of polymer, not sure how that will hold up so close to the compensator. If you're using a metal body light you'd be good to go.

Yea I agree, I don't think the polymer will hold up to the blast directly hitting it.

Mounting a Flashlight next to a FH/MB is never a good idea IMO. You are only introducing more shock & wear on tear on a potentially expensive piece of equipment. Move it back out of the blast area into a comfortable position to activate it. There is no way in hell I'm putting a $350 scout light next to a brake chamber and hoping for the best.

I am in able to mount it further back and still be able to activate it.

I did however swap out the Streamlight for a Surefire G2X that has a metal head. No issues for about the first two mags, but I neglected to lock rite the mount and it came loose and I removed it for the remainder of the range trip. It is now loctotes in place

The G2 mounted in that location should be fine for thousands and thousands of rounds

It still will get some powder residue on lens due to that location. I don't run my rifle lights that close. I do get a lot of residue on my X300/Glock combo. I just wipe it down before leaving the range ( sometimes with just a wet wipe) and don't have issues with caked up powder to scrape off when time to clean

Pencil erasers are great at removing carbon.

Related: Lumens: Surefire M600 Ultra Scout Review | Breach Bang Clear (http://www.breachbangclear.com/surefire-m600-ultra-scout-review/).

Reviewer basically leaves his WML with the bezel and lens right next to a couple of fairly blasty muzzle devices with no ill effects.

Disclaimer: This is a Surefire. Not a Streamlight. YMMV.
