Sierraeight was kind enough to send some Mk262 for us to try out. I know we already have a good review of this ammo here by Molon. But I wanted to do more of a field test at longer ranges to see what we’d find with the impressive velocity BH gets from this round.

We chrono’d 5 rounds out of Pappabear’s 20” Rem 700, and got 2827 fps average velocity with and SD of 10. Really good.
Our “house” load with H322 at .223 pressure only runs 2667 fps for comparison.

We also shot one 5 round group at 100 yards. I don’t like shooting 10 round groups because I can’t stay still that long. Here’s the result:

We started to simply check the POI at 500 yards to find out what gain we’d see with our 3.5 mil come up for the house load, but went ahead and just shot the 5 shot group. With the wind, I was holding left edge of the gong, and still easily got an MOA group.

My point of aim was center mass, on the left edge, about 7” lower than POI. So there’s (no surprise) a noticeable gain with the increase in velocity.
Comparing the house load against Mk262 at 1075 yards was where the velocity really shined. Our come up for my target load is 15.3 mils. We got there using Mk262 with just 13.3 mils. A savings of exactly 2.0 mils.

Other guns:

Pappabear fired some Mk262 out of his 16” Noveske SPR with an AAC Mini-4. This hot load ejected noticeably forward with the can increasing the pressure. But it ran good and yielded 2689 fps.

BCM 11.5 HF chrome lined barrel showed a velocity of 2508 fps.

Other observations:

Only a few of the case heads showed very light swipes. And that’s pretty impressive for how much velocity the round gives. I didn’t take pics of the case heads because the primer flow from the factory Rem 700 fired brass would be misleading to those who don’t see it all the time.

Also... I already processed some of the brass. The primer pockets are still tight for reloading... another clue that the ammo is safely achieving that great velocity.

very cool! thanks for sharing

what kind of vertical were you getting at 1075 with it?

what do you mean "vertical"? Do you mean what the vertical "mortar lob" of the ammo. IE 527 inches?

i assume you shot a group. how tall was it?

Mirage was a bitch. We were doing well to see the hits on steel. But 2 mils at that range was very noticeable.

We were getting wind fuxed all morning. As Pappabear stated, mirage was painful. We could easily mark our misses off the left/right side of the gong however.

Nice! The velocity this round gives is amazing. I swear I read somewhere that this round was rated at 2750 from a 20" barrel, but obviously that's not true.

We shot a second 5 round batch over the chrono and got an even higher velocity.

That might be true in a gas gun with 18 or 20 inch barrel. Bolt guns kick EM a little harder.

Well done, a lot of good information contained in the OP.

The longer barrel is where Black Hills pulls away from us. We had 3 stray rounds of 77 TMK loaded hot with XBR, and they were running close to Mk262 in the 11.5 BCM. I can't get into the 2800s without getting a lot of pressure signs with the faster, benchrest style powders we use.

I got to Chrono off of my 14.5 SOCOM barrel today. And the Mk262 beat my loads again.

Mk 262 Chrono'd at 2625 fps with and SD of 12

My hot XBR load Chrono'd at 2587 with an SD of 21.

At the barrel length of 14.5 the real deal Mk 262 starts to pull away by 38 fps. I hope to get some 10.5 data next shoot. I think I can keep up in the SBR realm.
